At least 1 other vehicle was struck by debris. Collapse blocks both directions.”

Update from Alert DC: “Interstate 295 is closed in both directions with no access from US-50/New York Ave split to the 695 interchange. Expected to reopen on Thursday at 10 pm. Local resident access only, others should avoid area.” (more…)

“Amazon and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) today announced a goal to create more than 1,000 new affordable housing units at Metro Stations throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. Amazon is committing $125 million in below-market capital to expedite development of affordable homes so that moderate- to low-income families in the National Capital Region can afford to live in communities with easy access to employment, schools, healthcare, education, and other amenities. The investment is part of Amazon’s Housing Equity Fund, a more than $2 billion commitment to preserve and create over 20,000 affordable homes through below-market loans and grants to housing partners, traditional and non-traditional public agencies, and minority-led organizations. “The National Park Service (NPS) wants to hear how you would like to see the northern part of Beach Drive NW in Rock Creek Park managed in the future. On July 8, the NPS will host a virtual public meeting and begin a public engagement process to inform the future management of the section of Beach Drive that runs from Broad Branch Road NW to the Maryland border and adjoining roads.

Beginning in late April 2020, the NPS temporarily increased socially-distanced recreational opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists on the northern section of Beach Drive and adjoining park roads by limiting drivers’ access during weekdays. Ross Drive NW and Sherrill Drive NW were also temporarily closed. Bingham Drive NW has been closed for construction. (more…)

Update from MPD: “Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit announce an arrest has been made in a traffic fatality involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred on Sunday, June 13, 2021, in the 1500 block of 14th Street, Northwest.

At approximately 3:14 am, a Honda Civic mounted the ride side of the curb at the listed location. The vehicle then struck a pedestrian on a sidewalk at a Metro bus shelter. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead.!–more–> The driver of the Honda Civic remained on scene.

The decedent’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

On Sunday, June 13, 2021, 29 year-old Gerald Lewis, of Northeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Murder II, Driving Under the Influence, and Reckless Driving.”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fourth District seek the public’s assistance identifying a suspect in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) offense that occurred on Saturday, June 12, 2021, in the 4100 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest.

At approximately 12:08 am, members of the Fourth District responded to the listed location for the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, members located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was captured by a surveillance camera and can be seen in the photos below:

Anyone who can identify this individual or has knowledge of this incident should take no action but call police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.”

Now that metro is getting back to good

From WMATA:

“As part of Metro’s investment in safety and reliability, construction will begin in July on the first of two major capital projects on the Red Line that will upgrade the tunnel ventilation system and repair deteriorating platform canopies. The work is expected to cause significant impacts for customers, with around-the-clock single tracking and station closures.

“It is important that we continue with this safety critical work so that we are ready and able to resume normal operations as the region reopens,” said Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld. “We will be working around the clock, seven-days a week, to maximize efficiencies and allow us to get the work done more quickly.”

Beginning Saturday, July 17, and continuing through Sunday, August 29, Metro and its contractor will install new, more powerful fans in the tunnels between Woodley Park and Cleveland Park as part of a pilot project to improve tunnel safety in the event of a smoke or fire emergency. (more…)
