“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch and the Metro Transit Police Department announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault With Intent to Kill (Knife) offense that occurred on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, in the 3000 block of 14th Street, Northwest.

At approximately 1:10 pm, members of the Third District were flagged down in the 3100 block of 14th Street Northwest for a stabbing victim. Officers located an adult male, suffering from a stab wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries. (more…)

Man Says Assaulted 3pm Saturday near the SW Waterfront Metro Station

“Officers received a call for a report of an assault that took place yesterday Saturday, April 20, 2019, around 3 pm in the area of the waterfront metro station. The victim states he was struck in the face several times by two suspects. During the altercation, the victim’s phone fell from his possession and slid across the ground. After the assault was over he realized that his phone was gone. The suspects were last seen heading Eastbound on M ST SW. There is currently no lookout for the suspects.

“Later this month, Metro will begin work to install a specially designed canopy over the north entrance of Dupont Circle station, the transit authority announced today. The canopy will enhance safety and convenience by protecting riders from precipitation on the system’s sixth longest escalators, which are 190 feet long and rise 95 vertical feet from the station mezzanine to street level.

When installation is complete early next year, the canopy will protect customers and the escalators themselves from the negative impacts of rain, ice, and snow, which have fallen into the original escalators since the station opened in 1977. Current escalator regulations require that any new escalators be covered from the elements, so installation of a canopy will allow for the eventual replacement of the escalators when they reach the end of their useful current service life.

Dupont Circle’s north entrance’s unique size and shape posed an engineering and design challenge because it is significantly larger than other Metro station entrances. (more…)

“Dangerous encounter at Columbia Heights station near closing”

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to alert you and others about an individual (see red shirt) that accosted my girlfriend and I as we tried to enter the Columbia Heights metro station after an otherwise nice night out. Official reports filed with WMATA too, of course. It was near closing so the gates were partially up and thus limited egress into station. Individual in question blocked our way at the bottom of the escalator and menacingly stared us down while mumbling and grunting. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

During yesterday morning’s commute (8:40am 3/26/19), I ran into a large group of teenagers gleefully running to the up escalators at Columbia Heights. I entered the station to find an adult male unconscious on the floor and a rider cursing about how the child had stomped on his head. Civilian medical professionals wandered up and the station manager said the medics were called. I could not ID the teenagers, so I left. But I can’t forget the sight of the man — or the laughter of the teenagers. (more…)

“Metro has issued a request for proposals to provide discounted on-demand transportation for late-night employees during hours when Metrorail is closed. Under a one-year pilot program, Metro would subsidize trips taken with ride-hailing or taxi companies during late-night hours to support more cost-effective options for eligible workers, primarily in the hospitality and health care industries.

The on-demand service will be offered seven days a week for trips within Metro’s service area between midnight and 4 a.m. Metro would pay the first $3 of the fare, up to a maximum of 10 trips per week per registered rider. The budget for the one-year pilot will be capped at $1 million. (more…)
