“Metro today detailed its future financial planning to address structural funding issues that will leave a projected $750 million shortfall in the fiscal year 2025 budget when federal covid relief funding runs out. Without an increase in funding, Metro would be forced to make drastic cuts to rail, bus, and paratransit services across the region.

The long-term financial issues facing Metro, come amid improving service, investments in modernization, and growing ridership. As of May, weekday ridership on Metrorail and Metrobus is at 50 percent and 88 percent of pre-pandemic levels, respectively, with ridership as high as 800,000 trips or more combined on bus and rail. Today “Red Line trains will operate every 6 minutes until 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, an improvement from every 8 minutes during off-peak daytime hours”

“Red Line customers will enjoy more frequent weekday service beginning Monday, June 12, and that’s just the start of improvements rolling out for rail and bus customers throughout the month of June.

Beginning Monday, Red Line trains will operate every 6 minutes until 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, an improvement from every 8 minutes during off-peak daytime hours. On weekends, Red Line trains will continue operating every 8 minutes all day, and every 10 minutes after 9:30 p.m. seven days a week.

“Ridership is bouncing back, and Your Metro continues to deliver service improvements to meet the travel demands of the region,” said Metro General Manger and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. “Ridership continues to set records on rail and bus, and we’re excited to deliver service improvements that will save our customers time and money at all times, every day of the week.”

Beginning June 26, Blue, Orange, and Silver Line customers will see service increases as well. (more…)

“The fleet of the future is expected to start serving customers in 2026 – Metro seeks customer feedback”

“With the design of Metro’s train fleet of the future underway, customers are invited to visit a pop-up exhibit at Gallery Place – Chinatown Metro Station to view current concepts and provide input on the look, layout, and features of trains. The fleet of the future is expected to start serving customers in 2026. The pop-up will feature physical samples, renderings, and videos allowing the public to interact with and provide feedback on the design of the new trains.

Located at Gallery Place – Chinatown Station at the 7th and F St. entrance near the faregates, the exhibit will be open at designated times through May 30. Visit wmata.com/FleetoftheFuture for the full schedule.

“Dear PoPville,

Suspicious package in Bethesda metro station — WMATA security called and told me to evacuate

Yesterday, around 7:30 p.m., I reported a highly suspicious package at the Bethesda metro station (above). The people on the platform noticed it but seemed non-pulsed. It was two boxes with wires coming out of the top, hooked up to a server board. It was on a platform with wheels.

I immediately called the Metro Transit Police to report it. They confirmed they would send officers to the station. A few minutes later, I boarded the red line and didn’t see the suspicious device enter the train.

A few minutes later, a WMATA officer called me and told me they had reports of this suspicious device on the red line heading to Metro Center. (more…)
