“Dear PoPville,

Suspicious package in Bethesda metro station — WMATA security called and told me to evacuate

Yesterday, around 7:30 p.m., I reported a highly suspicious package at the Bethesda metro station (above). The people on the platform noticed it but seemed non-pulsed. It was two boxes with wires coming out of the top, hooked up to a server board. It was on a platform with wheels.

I immediately called the Metro Transit Police to report it. They confirmed they would send officers to the station. A few minutes later, I boarded the red line and didn’t see the suspicious device enter the train.

A few minutes later, a WMATA officer called me and told me they had reports of this suspicious device on the red line heading to Metro Center. (more…)

From WMATA:

“Over the bridge and through the tunnel, trains on the Yellow Line are ready to go. Starting Sunday, May 7, Yellow Line service will resume across the Potomac River, following an eight-month, on-time and anticipated to be under budget rehabilitation project to repair the deteriorating 1970’s tunnel and bridge.

The reopening, announced last month, will provide a faster, more direct connection for customers between Virginia and downtown DC, including travel to/from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Yellow Line trains will initially operate every eight minutes weekdays from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. for the first month between Huntington and Mount Vernon Square, and every 12 minutes all other times and on weekends, a 60 percent increase in train service than before the closure last fall. In June service will improve to eight minutes all day, seven days a week.”

From the office of Councilmember Charles Allen:

“The following is a statement from Councilmember Charles Allen on WMATA’s Letter Delaying Fare Free Buses One Year:

“I’m frustrated with WMATA, but bold ideas sometimes take time. A one-year delay isn’t the end of the world, but I do hold some skepticism about Maryland and Virginia’s genuine interest in fare-free buses. (more…)

From WMATA:

“Starting Monday, May 8, Red Line trains will arrive every six minutes during the busiest weekday periods from 6 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 7 p.m. The change will help relieve crowding during rush hours when Red Line trains are at or near capacity. During the midweek 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. hours most trains between Union Station and Metro Center have more than 90 people packed in each railcar, with some trains reaching 150 passengers per car. Ed. Note: Last week we noted that the Judiciary Square metro had fallen.

Thanks, I think, to Michael for sending from the Gallery Place metro Friday:

“This is in Gallery Place Metro Station on the Green/Yellow line platform. This one was completely unfazed as I walked right up to it. His buddy watched me from the sidelines.”

From WMATA:

“Metro today announced concurrence from the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WSMC) that allows Metro to move to the final phase of its 7000-series Return-to-Service Plan. Under the new plan details, the operations team will implement a 15-day manual measurement interval with a path to progress to a longer measurement period in the future.

The new 15-day process comes as a result of data analysis combined with operational considerations that will make more trains available to meet the May 7 service schedule, which coincides with the return of the Yellow Line (more…)
