“Capital Bikeshare Offers 10 Free Rides to Metro Users Who Switch to a Virtual SmarTrip Card”

“Today, the District Department of Transportation and its six partner jurisdictions announced a new partnership between Capital Bikeshare, operated by Lyft, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) to incentivize riders to use clean transportation options. Metrobus and Metrorail riders who purchase a virtual SmarTrip card or transfer their physical, plastic SmarTrip card to mobile pay on Android, iPhone or Apple Watch will receive ten 30-minute classic rides on Capital Bikeshare, valid for 30 days. The promotion is also good for riders with an existing virtual SmarTrip card. (more…)

Traffic Fatality (Bicyclist Killed): Intersection of 2nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW

“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality resulting from a traffic crash that occurred on Friday, April 9, 2021, at the intersection of 2nd Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7:30 pm, a bicyclist and a 2012 Kia Sorrento were traveling westbound on Massachusetts Avenue, NW. Concurrently, the operator of a 2020 Honda Civic was traveling west in the same block. The Honda struck the rear of the Kia and the bicyclist simultaneously. The Kia then entered into the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and 2nd Street, NW, striking a 2013 Ford Van the was traveling north on 2nd Street, NW. The Honda then struck a 2015 Dodge Durango, that was traveling north in the same block before coming to final rest. (more…)

“On Sunday, September 20, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and its six partner jurisdictions will celebrate 10 years of Capital Bikeshare, which provides affordable, convenient, and sustainable mobility to riders in the Washington metropolitan region. Riders have taken more than 27 million trips over Capital Bikeshare’s 10-year history and to celebrate the milestone, the program is offering one free classic bike ride to all users on September 20. New eBike Fleet Returns to Capital Bikeshare Tomorrow (Wed.)

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and its six partner jurisdictions, announced that new eBikes with pedal-assist technology will return to the Capital Bikeshare system on July 8.

“We are thrilled that Capital Bikeshare’s eBike fleet will offer residents, commuters, and visitors another affordable, convenient, and sustainable mode of transportation here in the District,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Capital Bikeshare continues to be a cornerstone of our transportation infrastructure planning and how we move people efficiently through the region.”

Starting tomorrow, Capital Bikeshare, which is operated by Lyft, will roll out its fleet of dockless eBikes with pedal-assist technology. The eBikes can be unlocked using a scannable, contactless QR code in both the Capital Bikeshare and Lyft apps, or by using a member key. By boosting riders’ own pedal power, eBikes help riders make longer trips with ease. eBikes can be parked at Capital Bikeshare docking stations for free, and also at public bike racks using a built-in cable lock for an additional out-of-station fee.

“For close to two decades, the District has led the way with mobility options for our residents and visitors,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “Capital Bikeshare eBikes are a fun, affordable transportation alternative for long-time members and new customers to get around the region.”

“Improved E-bikes Return to Capital Bikeshare this Spring”

“1,500 new e-bikes will include new locking technology allowing parking outside of docks

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and its six partner jurisdictions announced that e-bikes will return to the Capital Bikeshare system this spring with a new mobile app experience that will include a hybrid locking technology.

“The return of the e-bikes is part of Mayor Bowser’s ongoing effort to improve active transportation and mobility in the District,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “These new and improved e-bikes will allow Capital Bikeshare riders to lock the bikes to bike racks at their destination, allowing unprecedented accessibility across all eight wards of the District.”

The 1,500 e-bikes will be added to the existing Capital Bikeshare fleet in a phased roll out throughout the spring. (more…)
