“Improved E-bikes Return to Capital Bikeshare this Spring”

“1,500 new e-bikes will include new locking technology allowing parking outside of docks

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and its six partner jurisdictions announced that e-bikes will return to the Capital Bikeshare system this spring with a new mobile app experience that will include a hybrid locking technology.

“The return of the e-bikes is part of Mayor Bowser’s ongoing effort to improve active transportation and mobility in the District,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “These new and improved e-bikes will allow Capital Bikeshare riders to lock the bikes to bike racks at their destination, allowing unprecedented accessibility across all eight wards of the District.”

The 1,500 e-bikes will be added to the existing Capital Bikeshare fleet in a phased roll out throughout the spring. (more…)

During the past few months, I’ve noticed more and more Capital Bikeshare bicycles in situations in which they normally would be seen. Someone taking a bike onto the metro, someone locking one up with a bike lock at a normal bike post (not a docking station), someone sitting in a park with a bike in front of the person, while a Bikeshare dock is about 50 feet away. Yesterday the gauntlet was thrown down by Jonathan Murray:

“I think it’s time for an investigation into if/when the @bikeshare/@lyft e-bikes are coming back, led by @PoPville”

But I have answered, and answered with vigor:
