From the Nationals:

“Yesterday, the Scholar-Athletes at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy celebrating the end of the school year received a surprise visit from President Barack Obama. The President enjoyed a first-hand look at the after-school programming of the Youth Baseball Academy, including a scrimmage between our HUSTLE baseball and softball programs, field activities for younger students, and the weekly farmers’ market offering healthy, affordable produce to neighborhood families. “Dear PoPville,

Attending the Nats game next Friday and will not have time to eat beforehand like I normally try to do (great restaurants within feet of the park!)

I saw that Nats Park has upgraded its concessions and new additions include ChiKo, Medium Rare, DC Empanadas, and lobster rolls. Curiously, there are aren’t really reviews of any of the new options available online from actual game goers. I’d love to know what food is recommended by the popville community inside the stadium.”

Ed. Note: Mine is 100% ChiKo.

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to shoot you a quick note asking if you had heard what’s going on at Rock Creek Golf Course… Apparently they have closed the back 9 indefinitely! I love this course and it’s really tragic to me that it has fallen into such disrepair that they just close half the course because it’s easier (and cheaper) than fixing it. I talked to a couple people at the course yesterday but I couldn’t get a straight answer from anyone about what was going on. Any chance you can help?!”

From the Wizards:

“Chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment Ted Leonsis announced today that Ernie Grunfeld has been relieved of his duties as president of the Washington Wizards.

“We did not meet our stated goals of qualifying for the playoffs this season and, despite playing with injuries to several key players, we have a culture of accountability and a responsibility of managing to positive outcomes,” said Leonsis. “I wish to thank Ernie for his service to the Washington Wizards. He and his family have been great leaders in our community and have worked tirelessly to make us a top NBA franchise.” (more…)

I’ve seen other comments saying D.C. is only a Redskins town. If I may – NO. Absolutely not. Unless maybe you are one of the lucky old timers who used to drink beers with Riggo at the Malt Shop – but in 2019 – no, no D.C. is not just a Burgundy and Gold town anymore. The closest you could maybe argue would be when RG3 gave us an ounce of hope before injury(ies). While many still support the team, it’s quite possible the owner of the football team may have also contributed a tad to the demise of the football fervor. Anyway, bottom line – AROD doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Oh yeah, D.C. kinda supports our mildly successful hockey team I think. Swing through Chinatown next time there’s a home game. As for the Nats, it is early my friends, it is early. Go NATS – I’ll see you at the park on Wednesday.

From All Purpose (79 Potomac Ave, SE):

“All-Purpose in Capitol Riverfront will be launching their new “Head to Head Series” for the Nationals Opening Weekend March 28 – 31.

For select series in the 2019 season, All-Purpose will pit local brews from DC Brau against a brewery from the city of the visiting team in a friendly competition at the restaurant before and after the games.

The first series is March 28 – 31 when the Nationals face the Mets and All-Purpose Capitol Riverfront will feature DC Brau’s Joint Resolution and Full Count as well as New York-based SingleCut Beersmith’s Weird & Gilly IPA and Plaintop Pilsner.

All-Purpose in Capitol Riverfront will now be open Monday – Friday at 5pm and will open two hours before the first pitch for all weekday home games

From Bluejacket (300 Tingey St, SE):

“Opening at 10am, we’ll have no fewer than 5 classic lagers on tap, including a brand new Dunkel, They Both Melt. This dark lager is crisp and refreshing, with toasty, nutty malt richness punctuated by herbal German hop notes. Subtly nuanced and balanced, They Both Melt has been traditionally lagered for 6 weeks and is naturally carbonated.

Bluejacket will pour an array of hop-forward juicy brews (5-6 total) on Opening Day as well, with a fresh batch of Perfect Places, our hazy IPA brewed exclusively with Nelson Sauvin hops, leading the list. For the second year in a row, we are releasing Perfect Places on draft and in a special, commemorative can for Opening Day. We’re also debuting Keener Sounds, a tart blond ale finished with key limes and vanilla beans. Nats fans can expect a few more fruited sours to round out this list as well (including new batches of Hurricane Alley, our Passionfruit sour ale, and Wallflower, a sour ale dry-hopped with Citra and Galaxy).

Chef Marcelle Afram will fire up the outdoor grill for the occasion, and we’ll have a handful of special cocktails and wines by-the-glass, as well.
