Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner has issued the following statement:

“There are no excuses for my insensitive and offensive language on Twitter. I am sincerely sorry for those tweets and apologize wholeheartedly. I believe people who know me understand those regrettable actions do not reflect my values or who I am. But I understand the hurtful nature of such language and am sorry to have brought any negative light to the Nationals organization, myself or the game I love.”

“Today, the Washington Nationals announced that Theodore N. Lerner has stepped down as Managing Principal Owner of the team. His son, Mark D. Lerner, will now serve in this role. Mark has served as one of the principal owners of the Nationals since the Lerner family purchased the team in July 2006. Major League Baseball formally approved Mark as the team’s “control person” earlier today during its quarterly ownership meeting in New York City. (more…)

“Nationals to Host 2018 Racing Presidents Audition on Sunday

Interested candidates still have time to submit their application for the upcoming season!

WHAT: Aspiring Racing Presidents will have a chance to “run for office” during the annual Racing Presidents audition on Sunday, January 14 at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.

Candidates looking to fill the shoes of George, Tom, Abe and Teddy will be invited to the Youth Baseball Academy to perform a freestyle dance, run a 40-yard dash and participate in two races from center field to first base, all in-costume. In addition, each applicant will be required to answer questions from a panel of Nationals entertainment staff members.

“The Washington Nationals named Dave Martinez as manager on Monday, agreeing to terms on a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year that makes him the seventh field manager in Nationals history.

Martinez, 53, joins the Nationals for what will be his 30th season in professional baseball. A 16-year Major League outfielder, Martinez has been a Major League coach for the last 10 seasons, serving as Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s bench coach and right-hand man in Chicago (2015-17) as well as Tampa Bay (2008-14). This is the first Major League managerial assignment of Martinez’s career.”

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld today announced that Metrorail will remain open an additional hour tonight for fans attending the Nationals/Cubs game at Nationals Park, as well as the grand opening of The Wharf development in Southwest DC, thanks to Exelon and Pepco.

The cost of the extended service – $100,000 – is being funded by Exelon, the parent company of Pepco.

After Metro’s regular closing time, four stations — Navy Yard-Ballpark, Waterfront, L’Enfant Plaza and Capitol South – will remain open for “entry only.” All other Metro stations will be available for “exit only.” (more…)

Fans can register for the Nationals Fan Club for FREE by visiting nationals.com/FanClub. Members will also receive exclusive content throughout the 2017 Postseason and into the 2018 season.
