“Dear PoPville,

Does the US Postal Service have a new policy on how we close envelopes? I was at the US Post Office on 14th Street waiting in line and I realized one of my card was not sealed. So since I was already in line, I licked it closed.

The postal worker saw me and yelled across the room – you can’t do that. I’m not going to accept that envelope.

When it was my turn I asked the staff how long I would have to wait before coming back to send the card. She said she would not accept a locked envelope and I could buy a new envelope. Her coworker added that I had to use a “blue glue stick”. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

Has anyone sent in their passport for renewal recently? I know the state department is backed up, hence why I want to send things along ASAP. However, across the city we’ve seen issues with USPS (arriving late, never arriving/stolen mail, low staffing) and I’m nervous about my passport getting lost in the mail. Any recent experience and advice would be greatly appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,

I remember seeing this post about credit cards stolen in the mail. I just had a similar experience. I got a new credit card, and Chase sent an envelope to return the old one for recycling, presumably because the card is metal.

I put the old credit card in the envelope and dropped it off directly into the mailbox at the USPS location at 3321 Georgia Ave NW on Saturday afternoon. Monday night, I got a notification that somebody used the card for a $120.05 charge at the Walmart on H St. Read More

From the Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) received a response to her most recent letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) about delayed and undelivered mail in the District of Columbia. In her September 1, 2021, letter, Norton noted that all eight wards continue to contact her office about late and undelivered mail. USPS described several actions it is taking. Norton said she will continue monitoring USPS in D.C. for the effects of the promised improvements.

Norton’s letter and USPS response follow. Read More

Thanks to James for sending: “My partner and I live in SW DC, and my sister lives in Ballston. She kindly mailed us a Holiday card on December 16, 2020, and it was JUST returned to her (August 18, 2021) because it was “not deliverable as addressed.” She has mailed things to that address more than once, so why wasn’t it delivered? And where has it been for 8 months??”
