Thanks to all who’ve been forwarding the good word. Ivan the four month old puppy who was stolen from the Washington Humane Society has been returned. PoP commenter Dianne in DC in writes:

“The puppy was returned and the reward money donated back to WHS. Quite a nice way to start the celebration of light.”

Indeed this is great news. And a belated Happy Hannukah to PoPville!

“Dear PoP,

Do you know anything about the legalities of bringing your dog to a coffeeshop in the district? I used to live in an east coast city before moving down here two years ago, and there, more often than not, your neighborhood coffeeshop employees wouldn’t look twice if you brought your dog in while you worked on your laptop, talked with friends, etc. The other day I was told by the barista that dogs legally aren’t allowed in coffeeshops here. Is this true? As yet, I haven’t found a spot to hang out with my (well-behaved) dog, and of course we both prefer sitting outside. But I’d like to bring him along when I can during the winter months as well. Any ideas on such laws, or are these really just rules each coffeeshop sets? And if so, does anyone know of any spots to take their dog?”

Hmm, this is a good question. I think I’ve seen signs around town for shops and coffeeshops in particular that say “dogs welcome” or something like that. Hmm, does anyone know if there is a law forbidding dogs in coffeeshops? I feel like I just saw a sign saying dogs welcome – maybe at Peregrine on the Hill? Anyone know if there are coffeeshops that welcome dogs? What if people have allergies?

And of course – more generally – do you think dogs should or should not be allowed in coffeeshops or any shops?

MPD sends word via the Humane Society:

“Four month old Ivan was snatched from his kennel at the New York Avenue shelter late on Monday afternoon. Three suspects were caught on surveillance video taking the dog from the shelter. The individuals entered the shelter on 1201 New York Avenue, NE posing as potential adopters. Once inside the shelter the suspects took Ivan from his cage and escaped by breaking through a wooden fence behind the building.

The Washington Humane Society is offering a $1000 reward for Ivan’s safe return.

WHS officials are asking anyone with information about Ivan to contact the Washington Humane Society/DC Animal Care and Control at 202-724-3834. Calls are confidential and a reward is being offered for information leading to safe return of Ivan.”

Thanks to all who sent word about this theft.

“Dear PoP,

You have a lot of pet people as readers and I’m sure they can answer this in a second. I haven’t been a dog owner since I was a teen. In the meantime, technology such as the microchips has been developed, which I think is a good idea. But can I just go to Petsmart or wherever and get whatever chip they offer (a microchip is a microchip is a microchip) or are there different kinds, brands, or levels of service, just like home alarm companies? I want to get the little one protected but have zero experience here.”

Can anyone recommend a good place to get your pet microchipped?

From an email:

“I recently took in a foster-dog, a 90-lb. brindle English Mastiff named Olivia. She was very recently rescued and has been fought, bred, and abused. She is severely underweight, had several recent surgeries, and is generally in pretty rough shape. She wouldn’t eat or drink for the first two days I had her and still wouldn’t even take treats from me as of Monday. Her biggest challenge is that she is not socialized: she is afraid of humans (including me) and, because she was locked in a garage, basically everything in the outside world is new and scary to her. I have never cared for a more needy, vulnerable dog.

On Monday morning, as we were crossing Mass. Ave. (NW, DC), her harness came detached from her leash. (This is odd because she still makes me drag her out of the apartment by the harness, and the connection to the leash was strong enough not to come apart when I pulled her into the hall. Regardless, it came apart one way or another.) Once she realized she was off-leash, she started running, right out into traffic, and kept going. I chased her to the Capitol, and the Capitol Police followed her to the intersection of 11th and G SE, but then they lost her as well.

She’s incredibly adept at dodging people, and she ran much longer and farther than I would have thought she could. Between the activity and her general anxiety, she is almost certainly hiding. She likes to hide in bushes; and, for a 90-lb. dog, she’s pretty good at making herself invisible. She is not at all aggressive – when approached, she runs/backs away as much as possible, then just hides her face.

She was wearing a red-orange martingale collar and a black Easy-Walk harness. She had had my dog Leah’s extra i.d. tag on her harness, but had gotten that off. (She’s a veritable Houdini when it comes to getting out of collars and harnesses!) She did not have her own i.d. tag yet, so the only tag she has on is the one from her rabies vaccination. She probably has not lived here long enough to find her way back, but if you see her (or even just think you might have seen her), please call (617) 947-5627.”

“Dear PoP,

Wanted to see if you knew any info on the “Larry’s Pet Supplies” store that appears to be coming to 3303 11th St NW or roundabout. My wife and I noticed a bright sign in the window yesterday while going to the dog park, and didn’t know if you had any more info.”

Thanks to all who sent photos and emails about this great development. I happened to run into Larry (pictured above) on Sat. afternoon. He is a super nice guy (and Vietnam Vet.) who is really excited to provide this needed service to the community. I think it’s a great location given that just a block away is a de facto dog park at 11th and Park Rd, NW.

The store is scheduled to open Feb. 1st and the hours will be 10am – 7pm Tues. – Sun. (closed Mon.)

“Dear PoP,

I’m hoping you can post this– a lost dog wandered into my yard on Sunday evening around 8:30pm (Columbia Heights/Sherman Ave area). He looks like an older black lab mix with a white patch on his chest. He walks with a limp in his back legs. It was dark when I saw him and initially thought he was injured. Animal Control asked that I bring him to the NY Ave station (1201 New York Ave NE). They didn’t think he was injured but probably had age related issues.

I hope this guy finds his family tonight!”

“Dear PoP,

Please help me. Speedo ran out of the house without his collar. With all the squirrels around there is no telling where he is. He is a Jack Russell Terrier. He bolted out of the house and took off down the ally and then ran behind the Methodist church and down New Hampshire Ave, NW then back up 7th St, NW from there is where I lost the trail”

If anyone spots him please email me and I’ll hook you up with the reader.
