From an email:

As a H St. NE/Capitol Hill neighborhood homeowner and business owner I want to introduce myself and share some exciting news. I started Spot On Training in April of 2010 in hopes of providing the dog owners in the surrounding community a positive option for dog training right here in our neighborhood. I’m a certified professional trainer and until now have focused primarily on in-home private training with some classes here and there. I’m excited to announce that in late January the Spot On Dog Training studio will open on H Street in the lower level of Metro Mutts. (508 H St, NE)

I think area dog lovers would love to hear about this new partnership and would be pleased to know that yet another resource has landed on their door steps. And that 2 businesses have come together to help make our neighborhood a better place to live in! Attached is a press release with more information.

“Dear PoP,

We are relatively new dog owners and are hearing about pet insurance from friends. I’m wondering if any of your readers have pet insurance, and if so, what are the recommended insurance companies, and what do they provide? Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.”

What do you guys think – is it worth it?

“Dear PoP,

Any idea what’s going on with the Stanton Park Dog Park? My fiance took our pup there this morning as usual and went they went back this afternoon the fence had been removed, effectively destroying the dog park. We’re hoping it’s just temporary, but there was no indication of what was going on…”

Hmm, according to Wikipedia:

“A playground is located in the western section of the park; a section in the eastern half is often used by dog walkers. The park is maintained by the National Park Service and as such, dogs are not allowed off leash.”

So I wonder if it was the NPS enforcing the no off leash rule? Any neighbors know why the fence was removed? Is this a temporary or permanent thing? Were dogs commonly off leash here?

“My dog was hit by a black SUV this morning on 13 and V Streets, around 7:20AM. Her collar broke and she ran from me, running up 13th Street, turned right on W Street. The last time I was able to find someone who had seen her, she was spotted running on 12th Place, between Florida and W Streets. I have attached a flier we are posting within a mile radius of our neighborhood (we live on 14 and V).

Her name is Durga, she is a Schnauzer/Terrier mix. Fully up to date on her shots but missing her tags because her collar broke. She is micro-chipped.”

UPDATE From OP:

“Some amazing soul just called animal control, he and his dog spotted Durga on 17 and t sitting on a fire escape. Animal control is getting her and said we can pick her up at the new york avenue shelter. We are going to get her now!”

“Dear PoP,

Our cat who went missing last Sunday, Nov 28th.

His name is Huckle, he is a 4 year old orange tabby cat. He is an indoor cat and does not have tags. He went missing after sneaking out of our house on the 1300 block of Randolph Street, NW. If he has been spotted, I can be reached at 202-360-6176. We are offering a reward (not sure if you would recommend the amount be listed but if so it would be $50).”

Thanks to all who’ve been forwarding the good word. Ivan the four month old puppy who was stolen from the Washington Humane Society has been returned. PoP commenter Dianne in DC in writes:

“The puppy was returned and the reward money donated back to WHS. Quite a nice way to start the celebration of light.”

Indeed this is great news. And a belated Happy Hannukah to PoPville!

“Dear PoP,

Do you know anything about the legalities of bringing your dog to a coffeeshop in the district? I used to live in an east coast city before moving down here two years ago, and there, more often than not, your neighborhood coffeeshop employees wouldn’t look twice if you brought your dog in while you worked on your laptop, talked with friends, etc. The other day I was told by the barista that dogs legally aren’t allowed in coffeeshops here. Is this true? As yet, I haven’t found a spot to hang out with my (well-behaved) dog, and of course we both prefer sitting outside. But I’d like to bring him along when I can during the winter months as well. Any ideas on such laws, or are these really just rules each coffeeshop sets? And if so, does anyone know of any spots to take their dog?”

Hmm, this is a good question. I think I’ve seen signs around town for shops and coffeeshops in particular that say “dogs welcome” or something like that. Hmm, does anyone know if there is a law forbidding dogs in coffeeshops? I feel like I just saw a sign saying dogs welcome – maybe at Peregrine on the Hill? Anyone know if there are coffeeshops that welcome dogs? What if people have allergies?

And of course – more generally – do you think dogs should or should not be allowed in coffeeshops or any shops?

MPD sends word via the Humane Society:

“Four month old Ivan was snatched from his kennel at the New York Avenue shelter late on Monday afternoon. Three suspects were caught on surveillance video taking the dog from the shelter. The individuals entered the shelter on 1201 New York Avenue, NE posing as potential adopters. Once inside the shelter the suspects took Ivan from his cage and escaped by breaking through a wooden fence behind the building.

The Washington Humane Society is offering a $1000 reward for Ivan’s safe return.

WHS officials are asking anyone with information about Ivan to contact the Washington Humane Society/DC Animal Care and Control at 202-724-3834. Calls are confidential and a reward is being offered for information leading to safe return of Ivan.”

Thanks to all who sent word about this theft.

“Dear PoP,

You have a lot of pet people as readers and I’m sure they can answer this in a second. I haven’t been a dog owner since I was a teen. In the meantime, technology such as the microchips has been developed, which I think is a good idea. But can I just go to Petsmart or wherever and get whatever chip they offer (a microchip is a microchip is a microchip) or are there different kinds, brands, or levels of service, just like home alarm companies? I want to get the little one protected but have zero experience here.”

Can anyone recommend a good place to get your pet microchipped?
