Dear PoPville,

I recently got a cat and need to establish a veterinarian for her. I’m new to having a pet, so I don’t have an existing vet. She’s a young cat (2-3 years old) with no special medical conditions.

On Yelp, I’ve seen good reviews of Friendship Hospital for Animals (in Tenleytown), but my understanding is that it’s pretty expensive, so I’m figuring I’ll reserve it for emergencies only. I’ve also read good things about SouthPaws in Fairfax, VA and (if I remember correctly) mixed reviews of CityPaws in D.C.

I have a car, which gives me some flexibility as to where I can go. My understanding was that veterinarians further out of the District tend to be less expensive, but I don’t know how far one has to go to see a price difference.

PoPville folks, what have your experiences been like with vets in the District and the suburbs? Any particular recommendations?

Ed. Note: Here are some old recommendations from 2010 but if anyone has new recommendations please leave them below.

Dear PoPville,

My neighbor and I rescued a litter of kittens from a nasty shed behind New Hampshire Street before Thanksgiving. I have been taking care of them since then, spending a lot of time with them to socialize them so they can be good pets. It has been so fun to have them in my house, but since I already have a dog and an enormous cat, I can’t keep them. They are completely litter-box trained, eating wet and dry food, absolutely lovable, and ready to be adopted in the next week or so. Would love to find them good homes in the neighborhood, so please contact me if you are interested.

In the box are Chico Tuxedo and Celebration, both males, and rolling around on the floor are Sierra Nevada (the only girl), Torpedo, and Hefeweizen. Torpedo is the largest of the litter and the daredevil, and the first one to learn to appreciate ear rubs.

Celebration is the smallest and sweetest—no words to describe how adorable this one is. He’s the one that loves his human best, always wanting to be near me even if there’s no food involved.

Sierra Nevada is the most confident and adventurous, the one who leads the litter into a new room and won’t run back to the box when the washing machine starts a new cycle.

Chico Tuxedo, named after the home of the Sierra Nevada brewery and his black and white outfit, is starting to come out of his shell but is the most reserved of the five.

And finally, Hefeweizen—the other little one—is truly the baby of the batch, with a big round head and gigantic mischievous eyes, but he can hold his own with the big guys.

Please email [email protected] if interested.

Dear PoPville,

There is a man in our neighborhood who walks his pit bull daily up and down our street with no leash. The dog hasn’t attacked a person or another animal as of yet, so that’s not the immediate issue (we’ll save that for another day). The problem is that the owner allows his dog to crap anywhere and doesn’t even attempt to clean it up. Now let me clarify; when I say anywhere, I mean anywhere, which includes people’s yards, the middle of the sidewalk, and even people’s front stoop steps! This is no small dog and thus no small load of crap. It’s absolutely disgusting! This issue was recently brought up at an HOA meeting and while everyone has seen the perpetrator at one point or another, no one has seen him recently (though the crap out front lets us all know he’s around) and no one knows where he resides.

I’ve contacted 311 about this issue and was told to contact MPD (via 911) the next time he is seen so that they can issue him a ticket for walking the dog without a leash and failing to clean up after the dog. The problem is that 1) I think calling 911 over this issue is a bit extreme and 2) it’s highly unlikely that they’ll make it there in time to catch the guy. Should I call 911 and report these incidents anyway just so there’s a record of such transgressions or are there other alternatives that I could explore? Yes, I could stake out the front of my house and then have a conversation with the guy but since he seems so elusive at the moment, I need other alternatives while I continue to clean up dog crap from the yard and walkways. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The United States Marine Corps has around 400 IED (Improvised Explosive Device) sniffing dogs that are being decommissioned and need forever homes. They all need forever homes. Most of the dogs are breeds such as: Labradors, Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, German Shepherds & Rottweilers. These dogs are all incredibly well-trained. Many of them have served in war zones and are responsible for saving countless American, NATO and foreign lives. The dogs are based in the District of Columbia (D.C.). Adoptive families must be able to travel to D.C. to pick up the dogs or arrange transport at their own expense.

Update: Email was a hoax. Some ridiculous fools out there.

Find Murray:

Please help find Murray, a dog lost in DC near H Street NE! If you can help put up flyers and search for Murray, please call or text 202-641-0955 or just come to 1012 1/2 6th St NE to pick up flyers.

On the morning of Friday, October 5th, I was walking my two dogs along with my friends’ dog who I was dogsitting. A guy came along and as he was passing us on the sidewalk, yelled that Murray, my friends’ dog, bit him. He grabbed Murray’s leash, then Murray pulled out of his collar and the guy started chasing him down the street.

After dropping my dogs inside my front door, I eventually caught up with the man, who had luckily not caught up with Murray, since he’d grabbed a long piece of metal trash he’d found on the sidewalk while in pursuit that he intended to use as a weapon on the dog. Once I caught up with him, he ended up assaulting me while screaming at me about the dog- dragging me around in the street by the arm and grabbing me in sexual places. I have filed a police report (and luckily the assault portion of the incident happened right near a police camera- plus he was stupid enough to leave the piece of metal with his fingerprints on it sitting on the ground so the police collected it as evidence).

But I don’t care that much about the police finding him— I want to find Murray.
