Dog struck by car at 14th and S St, NW Sunday Morning – Looking for Witnesses

“Dear PoPville,

At about 8:30 this morning I was crossing 14th at S Street with my two dogs, when a woman driving a very large older model Buick made a right turn on red from S and struck me in the crosswalk. One of my dogs was caught under her tire and dragged down 14th about 30/50 feet. I waved, screamed and banged on the car for her to stop, as the dog was still leashed and I was running alongside with my other dog in tow. She finally stopped and at that point he was trapped under the tire of her car. I am yelling for her to back up to free him. Finally she backed up and miraculously my dog jumped up, pulled from his collar and ran back down S street.

In the commotion I decided to run after my dog. As I was running the other direction the woman in the car started to drive off. A man on 14th had the good sense to stop the car, and at that point the driver did wait at the corner.

There were at least three other witnesses; two women and one man. It turns out my dog ran back to my house a block away and was sitting on the stoop bleeding and shaking. As I turned around, the two women had followed me to help. I decided to put him in the car and head for the vet hospital.

Upon passing the corner all four witnesses and the driver were there; one gentleman flagged me over, and I was able to get the drivers contact info.

However I was anxious to get my dog to the hospital and left without getting any other information. I have made a police report, but after calling the driver’s insurance company I am now concerned that I might need witnesses to attest to the fact I was legally in the crosswalk.

My dog is at Friendship Animal Hospital now and while it appears for the moment his injuries are not life threatening, he has severe gashes on his legs, and internal bleeding that is possibly from a tear in his spleen. It is still unclear whether he might have other internal injuries. He will be hospitalized for at least two days and may require more surgery.

As you can imagine we are distraught, but thankful he is alive and getting good vet care. Upon leaving the hospital this morning, I was presented with an estimate for charges totaling almost $5,000. And that is just for today and tomorrow; not including potential surgery and follow up care. The hospital is requiring an immediate deposit of $3,000 to continue treatment. Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds and am currently scrambling to line up some sort of temporary loan or credit line to cover the charges.

So my best bet at this point is to have firm witness accounts documented in the police report so the driver’s insurance company might be compelled to cover the costs.”

Eye of the Beholder…? “Tame Pet Rat” Found in Adams Morgan

“Someone must have lost there rather large, well fed, and very tame pet rat, found on Belmont near Columbia RD. It has a much bigger face then the pet rats I have seen before, but also has the identifying tail. If this is yours pleas give a description of color for its return. Our kitties have been inquisitive but not to interested, since it is not a sewer rat it is not a good kill for them. Still pretty sure it’s a rat.”

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to keep him in our apartment, we registered him as a lost dog with the humane society and an animal control officer just came to pick him up. We hope he makes it home safe, he is so sweet! ”

Dear PoPville – Raccoon Killed my Neighbor’s Cat

There is a crazed raccoon in the neighborhood that killed my neighbor’s cat on their back porch (9/20/13). DC Animal Control was contacted but I don’t know if a trap has been installed near their house. People should be on the lookout and think twice before leaving a pet outdoors and unsupervised.”

Sweet Dog Found in Eckington

“Dear PoPville,

Dog found on Rhode Island Ave NE near 3rd Street NE – no collar. He seems to be a pretty young poodle mix, with all white fur except the ends of his ears, which are grey. Found him running in and out of traffic, didn’t seem too savvy on the streets. At first he was really shy, but then let me pick him up and has been pretty friendly since then. He has not been neutered and is pretty thin, which makes me think he’s been a stray for a while.

Found wearing white collar, no tags and not micro-chipped (was checked at WHS this afternoon)
Found approx 2pm on 600 block of Hamilton NW
Extremely sweet dog, very people friendly
Recently neutered (which leads me to expect that there is certainly somebody out there missing him).

Stern Looking but Super Sweet Tuxedo Cat, Ace, Found in Rock Creek Park

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I were running in Rock Creek this morning and found the cat below in a tree. Well, actually, the park ranger and some other folks found him, but we volunteered to take him to a vet to see if he was chipped. Anyway, long story short – he IS chipped, but we’ve had no dice thus far contacting the owners. The chip service tells us his name is Ace. He is the sweetest cat ever, and it seems like he has been well-loved.”

More Details on DPR Doggie Day Swim on Sept. 7th – New Third Location Added

“The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will partner with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Washington Humane Society (WHS) to host the 5th Annual DPR Doggie Day Swim on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 12 pm to 4 pm at DPR’s Upshur Pool (4300 Arkansas Avenue, NW); Francis Pool (25th & N Street, NW); and newly added location, Randall Pool (South Capitol and I Sts., SW). With the end of the outdoor swimming season, this annual event provides dogs with a one day opportunity to partake in the pools, enjoy a swim and play fun aquatics games. DOH will be on location to monitor the health and safety of the pets and their owners; to issue DC dog licenses; and to provide outreach and education regarding pet vaccinations, dog licenses and dog park licenses.
