U Street Cafe (from the same owners as Tynan’s Coffee in Columbia Heights) opened up in the former Mocha Hut space back in 2009. Thanks to a couple of readers for sending word about their abrupt closure on U Street Thursday:
“This is awful and sudden news. Any idea why?”
If I had to guess, I’d say The Wydown probably killed them.

A low priority, but I wonder why these two buildings around 1111 V St. NW are hidden in Google Maps?”
Hmm, normally they do this for some embassies and government buildings but this seems like such a random location. Any guesses? Top secret locations for the next monster pop ups?

“Dear PoPville,
I just wanted to give a quick thanks to the awesome DC Fire Department for excellent work done last evening. These men and women don’t always get the credit they deserve and sometimes get some unfair criticism but in the only time I ever needed them they went above and beyond.
Last evening at 5am I was awoken to both the smell of smoke and seconds later my fire alarm going off. Literally within the one to two minutes it took to throw on some clothes and grab the dogs leash and make it outside they were there on the scene. My upstairs neighbors called them as that’s where the fire originated. Not only where they on the scene but in full force. I counted at least 5 Fire Trucks and an Ambulance.
It took them a solid hour and half to stop the fire and the entire time they were checking in with us (and my dog) and giving us feedback the entire way. They even went in and grabbed my laptop and my gloves. They could not have been more professional and since it was 18 degrees last night even offered a blanket it we needed one.
Fortunately the house is not a total loss and will be repairable and the dog and I made it out in one piece. And fortunately the DCFD made a terrible night just a little bit easier. And for that PROPS!”

“What is happening on the 1000 block of U Street, NW? The south sidewalk and the African-American Civil War Memorial are closed off by crime scene tape and there is a pile of bloody clothes being guarded by your officers in front of the CVS.”
MPD responds:
“Metro Transit Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred at the station.”
Update from MPD:
“Metro Transit Police report that the victim sustained a non-life threatening laceration to the ear. Metro Transit Police are investigating.”
The Washington Post reported it happened at 7:40pm:
“A man was cut on a Metro train Tuesday night during an attempt to rob him , authorities said.”
14th and T Street, NW

“Sadly, we can’t bring back Stetsons after it closed down. But at least the trivia night that had been going on there for 15 years is being relaunched at Cafe Saint-Ex, each Tuesday night at 7 p.m., starting tonight.
I took over the trivia writing and hosting gig at Stetsons in 2011, and was joined by co-host and co-writer Brian Lipinski in 2014, and after a few months of hitting the pavement and talking both to other bars and to our longtime regulars about where would be a good place to continue the Stetsons trivia tradition, we’ve made the move a few blocks over to Saint-Ex. While the location is a bit different, the homespun DC-flavored trivia we bring will be very much the same.

We haven’t had this much chicken news (The Chickery, Nando’s, The Bird, not to mention all the street chicken sightings) since Senor Chicken burst on the scene, briefly, back in ’09. All I can say is keep ’em coming.
This is of course the former Bistro on U Street that only lasted about a month here. The liquor license placard for Just Chicken says:
