I’ve often wondered about this restaurant located on the 600 block of T Street, NW near the Howard Theater and Florida Ave. I couldn’t find anything about it on the web. I’m guessing it’s either super incredible or terrible. Anyone ever check this spot out?

We last looked at the Howard Theater, located at T St, NW near Florida Ave, almost a year ago. Sadly it seems there has been very little progress. I’m not sure if this deserves a “Horses Ass Award” but it pains me to see zero external movement on this great structure. I wonder how much blame is due to the economy?

This building by the reservoir (near Howard University) really struck my eye this past weekend. I assume it is some pumping station, right? Why is there the tower type structure – is that for function or style?

After the jump more photos and a re-PoP of one of the greatest road signs ever. (more…)

The really cool Neat Neighborhood Find, ShowOff Apparel has closed at 2608 Georgia Ave, NW. This is quite sad as those guys were super talented. This is how cool the inside looked back in July.

In happier news, while not new, I know folks mentioned the Philadelphia Water Ice Factory on H Street, NE. People seemed to really like their cheesesteaks.

Just thought I’d mention that there is also a location at 2620 Georgia Ave, NW.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the property that has been forever boarded up at 13th and W was finally under contract. Well, now it has sold and there’s lots of work going on inside. I asked the workers if it was going to become a bodega or some other retail. Nope, it’s going to become a single family home. I’m just glad it’s not going to be a boarded up eyesore any longer.

Thanks to a reader for sending the word on this cool space. I was lucky enough to run into owner, Lisa Fricano, who told me she was “holding out for something special” on the retail space. She’d love to see it turn into a bookstore or an art space. And what’s super cool is that she is a big fan of the history of the building. She told me it was once a disco in the 70s called “The Jerk”. Too cool. Building on her love of history she has placed historic pictures and items in the front window.

I also love the copper:

You can pick up a postcard of the spot that has a picture from 1931 on the front and a poem about the building on the back:

A hardworking gal in her prime
Times a comeback for 2009,
Her vacant-eyed slumber
Didn’t soften her lumber,
And her penny is now worth a dime.

Much lamented by those who had seen her,
While around her Shaw’s main streets got cleaner,
She drew on reserve,
To renew and preserve,
Her unconventional, centered demeanor.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

“Hey PoP,

Just a little info that really got me excited…you know the row homes next to the Floridian and 9:30 club, at that crazy intersection of 9th, Florida, and Vermont? Well, if you’ve never noticed them, they have been an eyesore for many years apparently. They are owned by Howard University and were all boarded up and abandoned. This was truly a sad thing since the neighbors all around have really been trying to beautify the area by doing things like planting flowers and trees all along the median on Vermont. Well, a few days ago, I noticed they have FINALLY begun to renovate them! They’ve installed new windows and have changed the old faded red paint to a crisp cream color….with a contrasting trim no less! Looks great. I don’t know what they are doing with the houses yet – maybe admin buildings or even homes – but at least they’ve finally done something to spruce up our neighborhood.”

Very cool!

“Dear PoP,

Next to Garden District on S there’s a building that was a pupuseria until a couple of years ago. It’s being rehabbed and one of the workmen told me it’s going to be a “coffee bar”. Do you or your readers know anything about it?”

I hadn’t heard that. I walked by this weekend and the workers I spoke with weren’t sure about a coffee bar. Since there is already a coffee bar set to open nearby above Miss Pixie’s, I’m not sure it would be viable. Has anyone else heard anything about a coffee bar coming to this spot?

This home is located at 2234 13th Street, NW:

The flier says:

“Traditional floor plan with large, open kitchen and breakfast bar. LARGE, SECURE PKG space with overhead door. Sharply appointed kitchen with silestone counters and walk-in pantry. Warm hardwoods and exposed brick. Festive front patio and landscaped yard. Sky-lit stairwell and upstairs bath. 2 wood fireplaces. Separate laundry and storage. Less than 3 blocks to U street metro.”

More info and photos found here.

I think it’s no secret that I love this section of 13th Street. I had a chance to go into this home which was pretty sweet. It def. had the charm of an old house. My only complaint was that the bedrooms were def. on the small side. But I do like the exposed brick. So does $639,000 sound reasonable?
