Goodie 2 Go opened up in Sept. ’10 at 823 Shepherd St, NW.
Only the stripper pole remains…

Back in late April I shared the news that a new neighborhood bar would be coming to 3628 Georgia Ave, NW in the old (long vacant) Huron Pharmacy building. A number of people have been asking for an update – so here’s a bit more info that has become available. They’ve applied for a liquor license at the end of May:
New Tavern with food and beverage service for on premise consumption. Entertainment for inside premises and summer garden will include low volume musical performances such as two or three piece member acoustic bands and DJ’s. Seating capacity is 65. Total occupancy load is 65. Summer garden will have an estimated seating for 120 patrons.
They’ve created a Facebook page for the bar to be called DC Reynolds. You can see some photos of the construction progress and what it currently looks like on the inside – here and they describes themselves as:
American pub and grill opening fall 2011 in Park View/Petworth. DC Reynolds was founded by restaurateurs Jeremy Gifford, Jon Calvert, and Justin Gifford after years of experience with a wide range of diverse concepts. DC Reynolds will integrate a full service home cooked menu with a relaxed, comfortable ambiance.
But my favorite post from their Facebook page says:
Met with some farmers and cheese makers this morning at the Bloomingdale Farmers market to talk about sourcing local meat, produce, and cheese. The dragon breath cheese and prosciutto we tried were awesome!
Sweet! Stay tuned for more info as construction progresses.

Back on April 25th we talked about some proposed expanded locations. On a selfish note I asked people to vote for a station at Georgia and Upshur St, NW. Thanks to all who voted! The Upshur St location came in first place by a large margin. You can see the full list below:
CapitalBikeShare_TotalTally_2011-05-31-1
I’ll be sure to update when the official list of expanded stations is announced sometime after June 17th.

From an email:
COMMUNITY CELEBRATES OPENING OF INNOVATIVE, LOW IMPACT PLAYGROUND AT UPSHUR PARK
WASHINGTON, DC (June 1, 2011) — Join the Friends of 16th Street Heights Parks, Councilmember Muriel Bowser’s Office, ANC4C05, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the 16th Street Neighborhood Association on Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 11:45 to 4:00 to celebrate the opening of the new playground and the start of the pool season at Upshur Park. (4300 Arkansas Ave, NW – 14th and Upshur/Varnum St, NW)
· 11:45 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Muriel Bowser and Department of Parks and Recreation representatives

The new playground has something for all ages including climbing equipment, a sand area for toddlers, swings and a rubberized surface that is safe and sustainable. New fencing, landscaping and hardscaping along with picnic tables and a pavilion with a vegetated roof make it a functional, accessible and beautiful space for families to enjoy.

With the recent report of DC being the only market out of twenty tracked by Case Shiller to show positive price gains in the first quarter of 2011, it seemed fitting to profile a home that went under contract in four days and sold $20,000. over the list price. In looking at past sales on Grant Circle, it appears that homes directly on the circle rarely come up for sale, adding further scarcity to the equation of a real estate market with already low inventory.
Continues after the jump. (more…)

From @dcfireems around 6pm Monday evening:
“Update – 219 Upshur St NW – apt bldg – FFs making rescues – fire on 2nd fl”
When I stopped by around 6:15pm rescues were still being made.
As of 622pm it appears all residents were successfully rescued. A hard job on any day – made props to DCFD on a 95 degree day.

More good outdoor patio news – yesterday we heard about Capital City Diner’s (1050 Bladensburg Road, NE) great new patio and a couple of weeks ago Qualia Coffee launched their backyard patio at 3917 Georgia Ave, NW.
Now where the hell did spring go…? But they do look great!

I think my wife’s friend summed it up best when he txt’d us shortly after visiting Bill’s Seafood Kitchen (aka Fish in the Hood) for the first time on our recommendation:
“F**k you for not telling me about this sooner.”
Some other friends of ours live close to Bill’s Seafood Kitchen (3601 Georgia Ave. NW near Otis) and raved about it for quite some time, yet we never went. In fact, we’d lived in Petworth almost three and a half years before trying it.
Now, it is like an addiction. The wife and I discuss how long it has been since we last went–and if it has been an acceptable amount of time in order to go again.
It has become our DC best kept secret. And I’d like to hear about yours, too. But first, more about this amazing place.
Bill’s (most people just call it Fish in the Hood because of the window signage) makes amazing seafood. It has been briefly mentioned here before, but it is kind of surprising how under the radar it is, even by Petworth standards. It isn’t much to look at, but they keep the focus on what’s important–the fish. It’s a little overwhelming when you walk inside. There are about a dozen or more varieties of fish (you know a place has it goin’ on when you order tilapia and they ask “male or female?”), plus scallops and shrimp. Once you order (by weight) they will expertly fry or broil your fish. The sides are pretty great too. And they have this stuff called “Mango sauce” which is the most amazing sauce for fish and chicken you’ll ever try.
Discovering Bill’s has suddenly made us interested in finding other “best kept secrets.” Of course, these places aren’t literally secrets–but they are just so sweet to discover. Sure, there are some places that might be categorized as “best kept secrets” that, literally, are best kept secret. But hey, you have to kiss a few frogs to find a prince, right?
Out most recent discovery has been Ruff and Ready just over the line in Hyattsville/PG County. They only have three items on the menu: blue crab, Alaska King Crab legs, and spiced shrimp. That’s it. No sides. No fuss. Nothing. But those three items are to die for.
So let’s hear yours? Any recent discoveries or places you think others would flip out about? Things mostly under the radar that you’d love to see more widely enjoyed?

“Dear PoPville,
I found this yorkie yesterday afternoon running around grant circle. He’s a male yorkie with a blue harness, no collar and tag, and the microchip was not registered.
They can contact me at [email protected].
I know someone misses him dearly and I want him to reunite with his owners.”

Saturday, May 21, from 12 to 4p.m, 25 vendors will test their product at an almost risk free environment during the second Grey Market held at Local 16.
Grey DC, like many renegade markets popping up in cities, is an organization dedicated to building a stronger community in Washington DC. Grey DC allows vendors an outlet who lack the commercial kitchens and licenses needed to operate elsewhere. “The goal is for people to come into the program with an idea and come out a functioning business with a strong customer base,” explains founder Maya Robinson . “I’m hoping eventually people will go on to start filling empty retail spaces in DC.”
To enter the market, patrons must sign a waiver and pay a $5 fee. Specific vendor information can be found
here.
