1224 H Street, NE

Back in June 2010 we first heard that Sticky Rice would be expanding next door to 1224 H Street, NE. I actually forgot all about it until I passed by on Saturday as the exterior space was getting painted. I wasn’t able to look inside but looks nice on the outside.  I can hardly believe Sticky Rice first opened in 2008.

What’s the oldest “new” restaurant or bar on H Street, NE? Argonaut?

1210-1212 H Street, NE

The big news dropped right before Thanksgiving. From Red Palace’s facebook page:

Red Palace: Fare-thee-well.

After almost seven years the Red Palace will sadly close it’s doors at the end of the year. The current ownership is changing, and with that change comes new ideas for the future.

Red Palace had it’s beginnings in The Red & The Black and The Palace of Wonders. The Red & The Black a quirky little live music venue. The Palace of Wonders a Vaudevillian entertainment bar replete with sideshow oddities. Loving neighbors from the beginning it seemed only natural when they were joined in 2010 to become the Red Palace.

We would like to thank the H street community, businesses and the many talented artists and entertainers we’ve had the pleasure of hosting. We especially want to thank our patrons and our fantastic staff for making it a great place to be, and truly one-of-a-kind.

We love H Street, and feel privileged to be a part of the community. Join us over the next several weeks for a show, a drink and a bite to eat as we say farewell. Don’t miss our “Ball Drop” New Year’s Eve. It will be a party to be remembered.

Any fans of Red Palace? Stay tuned for word on the new owners plans.

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking down H Street and Souk was closed on a Saturday night. Do you have information if it closed?I enjoyed it the few times I went but it was never crowded.”

I called their phone number and unfortunately it’s been disconnected as has their website.

Souk opened at 1208 H St, NE back in Oct. 2009. Any fans?

Cusbah is located at the corner of 12th and H Street, NE. Their website says:

The Cusbah concept was created on the pretense that a hybrid American South Asian restaurant experience did not exist, at least not in Washington DC. We wanted to create a building block based on authentic Pakistani and North Indian cuisine, while providing an atmosphere rooted in multi-cultural America.

Cusbah literally translates to “little village”

With that translation, we hope to bring that sense of a “little village” or neighborhood bar and restaurant where there’s something for everyone to the ever changing H Street Corridor. Keeping in mind that DC is constantly evolving, we have many ideas and concepts that will hopefully keep us one step ahead of the game. We envision our restaurant to be the place where you grab a damn good Kebab, Curry or Naan and wash it down with a nice cold quality beer or cocktail all while listening to great music.

You can see their menu here.

Any fans? Any must order items?

1348 H St, NE

Huge news, literally, for H Street. The gigantic space at 1348 H St, NE has been taken over by the great pizzeria – Red Rocks. 1348 H St, NE was originally slated to become Sweet Charleston’s but that fell through and the space went back for lease in June 2012. For those not familiar with Red Rocks:

RedRocks is a bustling neighborhood pizzeria in Washington, D.C.’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, and in Old Town Alexandria.

The food at redRocks is inspired by the pizza from the best pizzerias in Naples, Italy. The menu features Neapolitan inspired, thin crust pizzas cooked in a classic Italian wood-fired brick oven. We cure many of our own meats and make our own sausage. We are committed to using fresh, locally grown produce and hand made cheeses, as well as sustainably raised meats whenever possible.

About 1348 H St, NE – I’m told Red Rocks:

will be 3 levels, with a rooftop bar/patio seating. roughly 7,000 square feet which should make it the largest restaurant on H St.

If construction goes according to plan – they’ll open in early spring 2013. Stay tuned!
