PoP Pizza Patrol: Red Rocks Coming to H Street, NE

1348 H St, NE

Huge news, literally, for H Street. The gigantic space at 1348 H St, NE has been taken over by the great pizzeria – Red Rocks. 1348 H St, NE was originally slated to become Sweet Charleston’s but that fell through and the space went back for lease in June 2012. For those not familiar with Red Rocks:

RedRocks is a bustling neighborhood pizzeria in Washington, D.C.’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, and in Old Town Alexandria.

The food at redRocks is inspired by the pizza from the best pizzerias in Naples, Italy. The menu features Neapolitan inspired, thin crust pizzas cooked in a classic Italian wood-fired brick oven. We cure many of our own meats and make our own sausage. We are committed to using fresh, locally grown produce and hand made cheeses, as well as sustainably raised meats whenever possible.

About 1348 H St, NE – I’m told Red Rocks:

will be 3 levels, with a rooftop bar/patio seating. roughly 7,000 square feet which should make it the largest restaurant on H St.

If construction goes according to plan – they’ll open in early spring 2013. Stay tuned!

My god here comes all the pizza.

Seriously, years with no pizza places and now three are set to open all within a year

theres always been pizza on h since i can remember.

        • SF

There was New Citi Pizza and that terrible Pizza Hut at the Hechinger Mall. For years we had nothing like a Red Rocks, Radius, Paradiso, etc. etc. Now we’re getting a huge influx.

I wish them luck– 7,000 sq ft of restaurant space means they need to sell a lot of pizzas. I was a fan of Red Rocks, until Pete’s opened in CH.

Meeehh. If they can’t put out a quality product for a small place….

  • I’ve been a huge fan of H & Pizza since it opened, but getting a table in there is sometimes a crap-shoot if you’re with more than 3 or 4 people. It will be nice to have an option that will likely have plenty of seating options.

    • H & Pizza, while good, takes literally FOREVER to place an order and get your food. I don’t want to stand in line for 25 minutes to get a pizza.

And yeah, pizza overkill on H Street. WTF?

      • dave b

I’m skeptical of how much the individual made-to-order pizza actually improves the pizza. It just takes forever. I think that place could make so much more money if it wasnt done chipotle-style. The ratio of food prep area to oven space is off the charts. The pizza is good, but for the love of god can you please make more than one or two pizzas at a time.

In love with the farmer’s daughter… H and Pizza!!!

  • Love Red Rocks! This is great news. Having more than one high-end pizza place is better than burnt out/empty store fronts!

Clearly you have not been to H Street recently.

      • Actually I go there all the time (and am buying a house there), and while there has been plenty of development, there are also plenty of empty and deteriorating storefronts left. This is a good thing.

        • Anonymous

are there any “burnt out” storefronts? i can’t think of any.

  • NHAve

Cool for H St but would not call Red Rocks pizza “Great.”

    • Tom

I strongly disagree… Red Rocks pizza is more basic but pretty great. While H & Pizza will offer tough competition… it definitely isn’t a sit down restaurant in the same sense that Red Rocks will be.

    1. OMG, Is this the end of H Street’s edge?!?!?!?! (sarcasm – you know someone was going to say it)

    2. I’m more excited about Manny and Olga’s than this…RR pizza is nothing special, IMHO.

Time for a moratorium on pizza places on H Street!

I don’t actually like Redrocks, Mellow Mushroom is pretty good though.

Someone must open a gym soon…too much good chow near home!

Fitness Together, Bikram Yoga, District Yoga, P Spot, and others are all nearby. I actually go to H Street more for exercising than eating.

  • ALF

This kind of made my day, not gonna lie. I am totally an H&Pizza loyalist. But they are better for pizza on the go (fingers crossed they start delivery soon). I’m totally looking forward to Red Rocks Roof Top just in time for the awesome spring weather!!

  • jch

red rocks here and pets near stanton square, woot! 2 good places walking distance.

  • I’m a huge fan of the pizza at Liberty Tree. The chef there was the original at Matchbox and his pizza is actually much better than what Matchbox has been putting out recently.

    • Touche. Liberty Tree’s pizza is excellent.

Yep, Liberty Tree has some awesome pizza.
