Public art approved for Farragut West and Takoma Metrorail stations

“Metro works with community groups to select art

The Metro Board of Directors today, Feb. 18, approved two Washington-based artists’ proposals for public art that will be installed at the Farragut West and Takoma Metrorail stations in 2011.

The artwork approved for the Takoma Metrorail station is by Washington-based artist, Sam Gilliam, who is best known nationally and internationally for his color field and abstract expressionist painting and sculpture. A large abstract mosaic tile mural designed by Gilliam will be installed in the underpass of the station entrance.

For his first public art commission, artist Michael Sirvet will create a series of low-relief, botanically-inspired aluminum and light sculptures that will be installed at the east Farragut West Metrorail station entrance at 17th and I Streets, NW. His work is currently included in numerous private collections both locally and nationally.”

This scene is located on 16th Street near L across the street from the building we looked at yesterday. I thought this was interesting because there were three very distinct styles. We have old school:

An odd combination, yeah?

Judging Buildings – School for the Arts in Learning – 16th and L St, NW

This building is located at the corner of 16th and L Streets, NW and houses the School for the Arts in Learning.

There’s some interesting art out front as well:

But what do you think of the building itself. I think it’s pretty sweet how they seemed to have built around the originally structure. Thumbs up or down?

Judging Restaurants – Teatro Goldini

Judging Restaurants/Bars – Mezza Luna

Mezza Luna is located at 1140 19th St NW. While I’m normally averse to any establishment with Cowboys paraphernalia out front, I am always interested in learning of good places to watch sports. So in addition to the food is this a good place to catch a game as well?

Iran Protest at 18th and K Streets, NW

This protest occurred Sunday afternoon. Before I got close I thought it was a strike against Hour Eyes… Anyone know why they chose the corner of 18th and K?
