Stan’s Gets a New Sign

We judged Stan’s back in 2009. For those not familiar with Stan’s:

““Meet me at Stan’s,” has been the tradition for three generations of devoted customers who gather for happy hour, watching sporting events, celebrating special occasions or just to chill with friends after work.

Washingtonians and visitors alike come to Stan’s year after year hoping to enjoy the legendary cocktails and warm, friendly atmosphere that makes Stan’s a DC favorite. Stan’s originated in upper northwest 38 years ago with the same great food, outstanding service and awesome drinks you find today. Today’s owner, Cathy, has maintained many of the traditions that made Stan’s a DC classic and added a few new touches of her own since she took over 14 years ago.

Stan’s is open for lunch, dinner and late evenings Monday through Friday; evenings on Saturdays and Sundays during football season.”

Chef Daniel Boulud’s DBGB opens in CityCenter

“DBGB Kitchen and Bar is Chef Daniel Boulud’s casual French-American restaurant located within CityCenterDC at 9th St. & H NW. DBGB marks the NYC-based chef’s first restaurant in DC, which he describes as his “Tribute to casual American dishes I’ve come to love since moving to the states, all done with a French flair.” Best described as ‘a little bit brasserie, a little bit bistro, half French, half American,’ DBGB serves seven varieties of house-made sausages, three house-ground gourmet burgers, seasonal Lyonnais-inspired cooking, and hit dishes from the original downtown, NYC restaurant.”

Ceiba closing after 11 Years by Metro Center, owners “next venture poised to open in early 2015”

“The partners of the Latin inspired restaurant, Ceiba, [Chef Jeff Tunks, Gus DiMillo, David Wizenberg] are turning a new leaf and have decided to close the doors at the end of this month, September 27, 2014. It has been an exciting 11 years for the sleek American interpretation of an urban Latin establishment, Ceiba, but now is the time for its final hour. It was a challenging and heartfelt decision for the partners, but with much review of the varied external factors, closing the doors was the best course of action. It will leave behind a legacy of spicy, tangy Latin cuisine and fiery memories – of tropical-style lunches, exotic dinner choices, and annual festive celebrations, right there on 14th and G Streets just blocks from The White House.

Says Gus DiMillo, co-proprietor and 35-year veteran in the hospitality industry, “It’s a business that has brought highs and lows—from great food and an amazing stable of talented chefs. It is hard to plan the closing of a restaurant, when you open a restaurant successfully.”

Ceiba has been praised in the press from Bon Appétit, Wall Street Journal, Wine Spectator to Washington, DC’s top print and online media periodicals and publications. Chef Jeff Tunks appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” showcasing Ceiba’s heart-healthy meal ideas including the Southwest Buffalo Burger and Grilled Chicken with Black Bean Corn Salsa.

The partners will simply focus their energy and time on their independent ongoing endeavors in Washington, DC and Virginia; and their next venture is poised to open in early 2015.

Gus, Jeff and David are indebted and thankful to their loyal supporters, neighbors, distinguished press, friends and family for their continued commitment to Ceiba. And most importantly, they are sincerely grateful to their dedicated staff for all of their efforts and hard work over the past 11 years.

PAUL bakery opens by Metro Center this Monday

“On Monday, September 15th, PAUL will open its sixth bakery café in the Washington, DC area, just two blocks from the White House – located in the Columbia Square Building on F St. NW in the Metro Center neighborhood.

The 2200 sq.ft. store is opulently decorated so as to transport you to Paris… with its antique fixtures, authentic French artwork, and elegant tufted velvet, suede and fabric chairs and banquettes. The café is illuminated by a full wall of windows, and will accommodate approximately 30 guests inside. The outdoor covered portico of the Columbia Square building accommodates table seating for 20 guests who wish to dine al fresco year-round.”

Reader Reports Hugo Boss at CityCenter Robbed Sunday Morning

“Dear PoPville,

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Today, [Sunday] just after noon, my husband and I were leaving our apartment at CityCenter to go to brunch. We typically walk past Hugo Boss and noticed four individuals running out of the store with arms full of suits and shirts and sweaters. A black Cadillac Escalade truck pulled up, they all rushed in, and the truck sped off.

My husband was quick enough to whip out his phone and get a picture of the car. We went into the store and shared it with the manager.

Given how unique the pick-up truck is, and the fact that security cameras throughout the store would have gotten solid shots, they’re confident that they’ll catch the robbers.

Still, though, sad and aggravating.”

New Sculpture Garden Concert Series to continue in September – with Brunch

“New outdoor concerts will be presented in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden as a prelude to the upcoming concert season. Inspired by the beloved summer tradition of Jazz in the Garden, concerts take place at noon and 1:00 p.m. on Sundays during the month of September. Watch summer turn to fall while enjoying live music and a delicious brunch menu at the Pavilion Café. Served from 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m., the tempting menu includes scrambled eggs with chives, breakfast pizza, granola and yogurt parfait, fresh fruit, mimosas, and more!

On September 7, the U.S. Air Force Strings will play 19th-century French and American music in honor of Degas/Cassatt; on September 14, Ricardo Marlow and Ensemble will entertain with Flamenco music and dance; on September 21, Seldom Scene provides lively strains of bluegrass; and on September 28, the National Gallery of Art Wind Ensemble plays music by Andrew Wyeth’s favorite composers in honor of Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In.

There are six public entrances to the Sculpture Garden: one on Constitution Avenue at 9th Street, three on 7th Street (one directly across from the Gallery’s West Building entrance), and two on the National Mall between 7th and 9th Streets NW.”
