A reader writes:

“This morning in Columbia Heights, I walked past what I believe to be the last Christmas tree of 2013, five months after the holidays. I can’t tell if the person was too stubborn to get rid of a tree that still had the tiniest bit of green or if this is just appalling laziness. Anyway, I think you’ll be hard-pressed to get a “Last Christmas Tree” submission later than May 13.”

Hahaha at this point I think it is almost certain another will be found in June…

From @DCPoliceDept around 4:45pm:

“Stabbing in the 2800 blk of 14th St NW”

From @IAFF36:

From a press release:

“What is worth preserving for posterity? 5th graders in Ms. Ronda Scott’s class at Raymond Education Campus explored this question while learning about the role that conservators and photographers play in preserving and maintaining the U.S. Capitol. On Tuesday, May 6th at 6:30pm, students will open an exhibit of their photographs at The Coupe restaurant (3415 11th St NW). Students will lead a 30 minute presentation about this project which included several lessons and a trip to the Capitol led by Live It Learn It (LILI) and a photography workshop taught by Charles Badal, photographer with the Architect of the Capitol. Students were challenged with capturing elements that are worth preserving of the Capitol, their neighborhood, their school and their personal lives using cameras on loan from Nikon Professional Services. The result is an exhibition in which the Brumidi Corridors of the Capitol are juxtaposed with a prized Wrestlemania t-shirt since students thought both should be preserved. (more…)

sundress_fest_wonderland

Gonna be an epic Sundress Fest this year. Activities all day and judging (of which I’m one) of the participants begins at 5pm:

“As we celebrate our first decade in the neighborhood, Wonderland invites D.C. to come out Sunday, May 4, to support a local charity by putting on a sundress and celebrating life. We’ll have an all-day happy hour for ANYONE in a sundress. We’ll have a pig roast (and veggie options!) in our Bohemian Beer Garden. And we’ll have our annual Champagne of Beers toast to the Wonderland mascot, the White Rabbit. You can bring your own sundress, or get one at Wonderland. We’ll have racks of sundresses, and everyone can find one that fits. It’s all for charity, so c’mon, show a little leg.”

Wonderland is located at 11th and Kenyon St, NW.

From an email:

“Thanks to all of our friends and neighbors who came out last weekend to officially kick off the fifth season of the Columbia Heights farmers market! We’re excited to make 2014 the best season yet.

Now we need your help. Last year, our farmers market matching funds program provided over $13,000 to make it easier for low-income families to eat healthy and stretch their food budgets. It’s simple. If a customer spends $5 dollars on fruits and vegetables at the market using Federal nutrition benefits like food stamps, we provide an additional $5.

$5 in food stamps = $10 in healthy fruits and vegetables

$10 in food stamps = $20 in healthy fruits and vegetables

The program reached more than 1,200 families in the last two years alone. But we need your help to make sure these families can count on us again this year.

We need to raise $10,000 by May 21st to ensure that low income families can access healthy, affordable food for the entire 2014 market season.

Every dollar helps, so please donate today. Many thanks for your support, and we’ll see you at the market!”

fire
Fire from alley between the 1400 block of Columbia and Irving St, NW previously reported in April of 2013

Unfortunately a reader reports that the man setting fires in Columbia Heights, which we previously spoke about almost exactly a year ago, has returned:

“The fire starter from columbia heights was back this am, police refused to take a report. Same alley. Again got him after the fire was out but building and alley reeked of smoke. I asked multiple times for that report to be written up and got shut down. I wanted a paper trail because that is always asked of me whenever I try to talk to someone higher up about it. I asked for a misc report and they refused.”
