“Dear PoPville,

I know there are massive problems with massive potholes in DC, but I have never seen anything like what happened to my street. The stretch of Belmont St. NW between 13th and 14th NW was paved a few months ago, with one giant exception: the 100 feet or so that intersects 14th St. NW was prepped and coated weith gravel then abandoned. During the past 2 months winter has wreaked havoc on that area, to the point now where it looks like it’s been bombed. I wrote to DDOT and received a standard “thanks for letting us know, we’ll pass your concern along” for email. (The reply took about a month.) Any other suggestions regarding how to get DDOT to act? Maybe they need to wait until spring to pave again? It’s just odd that they paved the entire block and left this one portion to be destroyed by the elements.”

Ed. Note: Perhaps Potholepalooza will return in April?

“Dear PoPville,

Due to the recent near-misses with reckless drivers around the District, I have decided to invest on a dash cam for my protection and entertainment. I have been capturing the usual careless drivers every now and then.

Saturday I think I captured a very near-miss involving a guy running a red light at the intersection of 15th & Irving St NW as pedestrians were crossing the street. I was so disgusted that I went to the nearest MPD station to give them the footage since the license plate is clearly visible and the person at the counter didn’t seem to care, and just said to email [email protected] and MAYBE someone will contact me.

Anyway, since I needed to vent, here’s the footage.”

A witness observed the suspect steel a package from the porch of a resident. Another good Samaritan later stopped the suspect and held him until the police arrived. PSA 409 Officer Tran responded and after his investigation arrested the suspect for 2nd Degree Theft. This is a great example of community members being vigilant and assisting the police with taking suspected thieves off the street.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last Tuesday (the snow day), I fainted while I was going down the escalator into the Columbia Heights metro. It was pretty scary–I was standing on the escalator not feeling so great, and then, the next thing I knew, I was lying at the bottom of the escalator with a big cut on my head. But what made it SO much better was the kindness of other Metro passengers. I remember three women, in particular, who stopped to make sure I was ok and then stayed with me until the ambulance came to get me. They were so comforting and kind; I think I would have totally panicked if they weren’t there. One of them let me borrow her phone to call my husband, another ran to get help, etc., and they all stayed and talked with me, which made me feel a lot better and less scared. I don’t remember any of their names, but on the off chance they read this, I wanted to say thank you! (The WMATA employees and EMTs who helped me were also really great–very sympathetic and professional.) I ended up having to get three stitches in my forehead, but the doctor otherwise gave me a clean bill of health, and I got the stitches removed yesterday!”
