A reader reports:

“Last night at the ANC 1A meeting, the general manager of Jenkins Capital BBQ (taking over the old Ruby Tuesday spot in Columbia Heights) talked a little about their opening. He said they’re aiming to open very soon, “hopefully” next week.

He said their menu will be traditional barbecue, featuring brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs and more (and 7 sides, including mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and collared greens). He also mentioned that they plan on having a 45-seat outdoor area, and a 16-seat bar inside with televisions. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

You think you had a bad day? Listen to this… On 6/14 I was woken up by my alarm clock, which is odd, because usually my dog wakes me up 30 min before that goes off. I get out of bed to discover my dog is on the floor, shaking and having trouble breathing. I rush her to the vet. The vet says she’s stable and breathing, but they want to hold her for the day.

I go home, shower, get ready for work (for the last month, on top of my job responsibilities, I’ve been filling in for my co-worker who has been out, so I’ve been crazy busy). I’m running late at this point, but I’m still shaken up because of my dog, so I don’t really care (and I knew my boss would understand). I go to the garage in the basement of my building to get my bike, only to discover it is not there. Some asshole broke into my apartment complex, made his way to the garage, and stole my bike. It’s a 2011 Schwinn Merge hybrid bike (photo above.) (more…)

And by dance of course I mean cross the street in new (and hopefully safer) way.

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will activate the District’s newest “Barnes Dance” traffic signal operation at approximately 11:00 am Thursday, June 15, at the intersection of 14th Street and Irving Street, NW, in the Columbia Heights neighborhood.

Also known as a “pedestrian scramble,” a Barnes Dance intersection allows pedestrians to cross diagonally while vehicles on all sides of the intersection are stopped. The new traffic signal timing features an all-red pedestrian-only phase and “No Turn on Red” restrictions designed to improve operations and create a safer intersection for all users. (more…)

Speaking of tow trucks…

“Dear PoPville,

This gem broke down and was left on the 1500 block Euclid Monday morning. It’s still there! Parked in the middle of the lane.”

Brennan also tweets us last night:

“this street sweeper’s been sitting on Euclid & 16th NW for 2 days? It’s kinda killin’ the traffic flow.”

Ed. Note: Maybe this guy is all booked up:

This might be set a new record for “long time coming”! Back in August 2013 we first posted about Flip It coming to this space. In December 2014 they looked close to opening. Then crickets. Finally some new signage and Dear God please be a proper Diner. STAY TUNED.

A reader reports:

“I walked by El Rinconcito II over Memorial Day Weekend, and there were a couple guys going in and out with renovation/construction type equipment. I asked them when it was re-opening and they said, “next month!” — fingers crossed for sometime this June!”

El Rinconcito II suffered a terrible fire last October. There were initial hopes they’d reopen in April. Fingers now crossed for June!!

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking my dog and a friends dog (both Labrador Retrievers) home from the 11th Street dog park in Columbia Heights on Thursday, June 1st when a loose dog approached us.

We were on Sherman Avenue NW between Lamont and Kenyon heading south. Both of my dogs were on leash but the loose dog had no collar, leash or owner present. The dog went for the black lab first and then attacked my dog, Griffin. The dog had a strong hold on Griffin’s neck and head for a while and had him pinned on his back. With the help of some people in the area we were able to get the dog off of Griffin after a few minutes and secure it with a leash. The police were called and the dog was picked up by DC animal control. (more…)
