Honoring Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement on the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“We have lost a champion of justice, an icon and patriot, a woman who lived the concept of building a more perfect union. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for us until the very end, and it is that fighting spirit – that we were fortunate as a nation to benefit from time and time again – that made us love, respect, and admire her. Tonight, we are heartbroken. We are grateful for one life lived so fiercely that it forever changed the lives of millions. We send our condolences to Justice Ginsburg’s family and loved ones and to a nation already in mourning, trying once again to fathom a monumental and devastating loss.”

“Through much of the 19th century and the early 20th century, Washington DC experienced a boom in alley dwellings. While the real estate developers were designing and constructing impressive homes for the wealthier residents, they were building much smaller structures in back alleyways with mostly no running water or electricity. As the city’s population rose, the poor and working-class people began living in these dwellings in large numbers. With a majority Black population, these alleyway neighborhoods created tightly-knit communities. (more…)

“Yet another DC bar closed for good: Billy Goat Tavern, outpost of the Chicago bar of SNL fame. It’s burgers and cheap breakfasts, and friendly bar scene, were popular with Georgetown Law students, office workers, hotel guests, and employees of nearby labor unions.”

According to yelp they’ve been closed since August.

“As you all know so many restaurants on Capitol Hill have closed already and we could be next.”
