1769 Columbia Rd, NW

Dear PoPville,

I just noticed that there is a new construction permit up at the old Pizza Hut location on 1769 Columbia Road. The Permit is for alterations by owner and the owner is listed as Tommy Hoang. A quick google of Tommy Hoang + DC shows that he is behind Pho 14.

Pizza Hut closed at 1769 Columbia Rd, NW back in Aug. 2011. Pho 14 is the super popular joint at 1436 Park Rd, NW in Columbia Heights. You can see their menu here.

The owner Mr. Hoang writes me:

“To us, it has been a true honor and privilege to have served the Columbia Heights community for the past years, we hope to continue to promote our culture and food throughout other locations in the District.”

CityPaper reported yesterday that they plan on opening in late summer/early fall. Updates as construction progresses. Great news for Adams Morgan!

I once played a vicious game of vodka pong. It ranks very high on the list of stupidest things I’ve ever done in my life. Even though it was almost ten years ago, it still hurts thinking about it…

Back in the day the Bottoms Up bar, located at 2309 18th St, NW, used to have an upside down woman in their front window. Now they have a duck out front. I felt that was worth sharing on the Friday before a three-day weekend…

Any fans of Pi Pizzeria or the bar downstairs?

2102 18th Street, NW

Back in March 2012 I shared some scuttlebutt saying that the old Duchess and The Queen at 2102 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan was possibly going to become a wine bar. A new liquor license posting has more details:

“The new restaurant will be a Belgium bistro, with a sidewalk Café with 12 seats, the establishment will have a seating capacity of 160, and a total occupancy load of 280. There is an entertainment endorsement. This will also include a Brew Pub.”

Awesome!

Back in Jan. 2012 I mentioned that a new Ramen shop might be coming to the former Jumbo Slices and Kabob space at 2441 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan. They are opening today! Their Web site says:

We’re just a couple guys who are passionate about ramen, which we feel is the ultimate comfort food, inspiring childhood memories of sharing with family and friends. Our sole focus is to create the best ramen on the planet, without using artificial flavorings of any kind, sourced from pure bone broth coupled with the freshest ingredients available.

We do NOT favor any particular style or cultural influence when it comes to our ramen dishes. With an unbridled approach to culinary creativity, we strive to deliver a unique dining experience that highlights a fusion of diverse flavors from across the globe. From ramen houses in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Seoul, to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, we are pleased to see that others love ramen as much as we do… and so we are especially proud to open our doors in Washington DC, in the heart of a city we love to call home.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve. Humbly Yours…

“Dear PoPville,

Check out the “old bones” that lie under the drywall, linoleum, indoor/outdoor carpet, and drop ceiling at the former Payless Shoes site on Columbia Road. More importantly, it’s the former Avignone Freres historic bakery, which furnished the White House with cakes and pastries.

If you walk by the site today, you can still see the same square pillars. Hopefully, the original marble (or faux marble) columns can still be unearthed beneath the drywall that’s there now…”

Payless Shoes closed at 1777 Columbia Rd, NW in Nov. 2011.

Back in Aug. 2011 we saw how awesome the field at Walter Pierce Park (Adams Mill Road and Ontario Place, NW) in Adams Morgan was looking. Looks like the restoration is completed. One big change you’ll note are the pretty big fences. Do you think they are a necessary evil?

On the Adams Morgan listserv Mindy updates folks:

As I’m sure many of you have already seen, the field at Walter Pierce Park is now back online and ready for use (albeit with a permanent fence around it). According to DPR, the field will be open for free usage most of the time (unless otherwise permitted) and the gates will only be locked for maintenance purposes.

If you have an organized league, class, program, event that wants to use the field, you must apply for a permit from DPR (http://dpr.dc.gov/DC/DPR/Facilities+and+Permits/Permits+and+Reservations).

If you just want to play some Frisbee, toss a ball, or lay on it, and it is not permitted at the time you wish to use it, you’re free to do so.

Signage has been posted at the gates explaining the need for a permit and we’re working with DPR to make sure those signs are bilingual.

While there are a whole host of rules, regulations and requirements affiliated with athletic fields in the DPR system (available on their website), there are a few important ones that everyone should be aware of whether you have a permit to use the field or not.

1) Boisterous conduct, vulgar and profane language is prohibited.
2) Fields should not be used within 24 hours of significant rainfall.
3) No dogs are permitted, with the exception of registered service dogs.
4) Alcohol is not permitted anywhere in the park.

The field is currently permitted for the following dates/times:

Mondays through June 14 3:30pm-5:30pm
Tuesdays through June 14 3:30pm-5:30pm
Wednesdays through June 28 6pm -9pm
Thursdays through June 14 3:30pm-5:30pm
Thursdays through May 31 6pm-9pm
Saturdays through June 26 10:30am-1pm
Sundays through June 26 10:30am -1pm

Some folks have already complained about the excessive drinking occurring on the field on Thursday evenings. DPR and MPD are both aware of the situation.

If you have any issues with people using the field when they shouldn’t be, or issues with the conduct of those using the field, please don’t hesitate to contact the DPR Park Rangers: 202-441-2605.
