Bayou on Penn replaced by Alfred House Private Event Space and Music Venue

Well this is awkward I had no idea Bayou closed!?!?!! I mean I knew Bayou on the Hill had closed but holy smokes was I asleep at the wheel. Well, better late than never and here’s the deal on their replacement:

“As you may know, we closed Bayou back in May. However, we still have the space and we’ve renovated it into a gorgeous private event space we now call Alfred House. We are using it as a private event venue that people can rent out for private parties. We named Alfred House after Alfred Mullett, an American architect who designed the Old Executive Office Building, among other federal buildings in DC. He actually lived in the rowhouse where the venue is, so that’s how we came up with the name. A fully restored 1889 rowhouse, Alfred House offers a full kitchen, two bars, and a customizable space for any kind of event. With our preferred caterers and in-house party planners, the Alfred House is the perfect spot for social events, corporate gatherings, and wedding parties.

On the weekends, we’re also using the space as a live music venue, much like Bayou. (more…)

Outdoor Summer Concert Series Celebrating “Americana and folk, country, blues, jazz, and zydeco” Returns to U.S. Botanic Garden Starting June 22

“The United States Botanic Garden is pleased to announce the return of their popular American Roots Music Concert Series for 2017. The summer concert series, which the USBG first offered in 2015, celebrates American roots music – Americana and folk, country, blues, jazz, and zydeco.

Concerts June through August will be held outdoors in the National Garden Amphitheater surrounded by the beautiful Regional Garden of native plants (rain location inside the Conservatory in the Garden Court). The USBG continues to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the National Garden, which opened in 2006. All concerts are free of charge. Amphitheater seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Anyone Know What’s Going On With the Fort Reno Concert Series This Year?

Wondering if you have heard anything about the Fort Reno concert series? The website hasn’t been updated in a while and just says they are still looking for funding…Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

Foo Fighters will be playing the grand opening of the new music venue, Anthem, in Southwest Waterfront.The show is October 12th.

While this will undoubtedly be a great show, the tickets are $100 – $175 before fees. I love the Foo Fighters and I don’t know how much the band controls ticket prices, but this seems like a jerk move to their fans.”

Since I really have no idea, I’m curious what you guys think – jerk move or not?

Heads Up: Concert Ticket Scam

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to drop a line about a “new” ticket scam similar to the one in October.

I got duped myself, after buying 4 tickets to the upcoming U2 show. Fortunately, I was able to trick the scammer by posing as another buyer before cornering him and demanding my money back, but there are multiple posts on Craigslist by this same outfit.

I suspected they were fake and did some research after I bought them. They looked identical to the fake Adele tickets. Also, after some research, I discovered that all the GA tickets to the U2 show are “paperless”, meaning you never get a ticket, you swipe the credit card that you bought the tickets with and then show an ID. Do not touch the works of art unless it is indicated that you may do so.
Do not ride bicycles or use in-line skates and skateboards in the Sculpture Garden. Either walk beside your bike or secure it at one of the hitching posts located near the entrances on Constitution Avenue and Madison Drive.
No pets other than service animals are allowed.”

8th Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival is Saturday!!

“Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region is excited to announce that Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Town Mountain, and Dom Flemons will be headlining the highly anticipated 8th Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival on Saturday May 13, 2017 that will feature nine hours of performances by nearly 40 regional bluegrass, folk, and Americana artists on five stages spread throughout the beautiful Kingman and Heritage Islands Park.

Also scheduled to perform are The Woodshedders, Walter Martin, Nora Jane Struthers & the Party Line, The War & Treaty, among many others. In addition to the incredible local tunes, the Festival will feature fun for all ages, including various outdoor activities, educational tents, a kids’ zone, delicious food, beer, cocktails, and more. The Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival has become the largest all-local music festival in the District, attracting over 10,000 guests annually since 2014.

The Festival will be expanding on its Zero Waste initiative that began last year in partnership with the Department of Energy and the Environment (DOEE) in an effort to preserve the integrity of Kingman Island and support the District’s goal of lessening our local carbon footprint. Each festivalgoer will be provided with a reusable cup and food vendors will be using only recyclable and compostable serving containers. Additionally, various composting and recycling cans will be placed and closely monitored throughout the day.

As a green and waste-free festival, walking, biking and public transit are encouraged.

DC Streetcar is the official mode of transportation for the festival and has a stop right near the festival grounds. Rider should board an Eastbound car to the Oklahoma & Benning Road stop. Additionally, a Free Shuttle will be running from the Stadium Armory Metro Station all day. A Bike Valet will also be available for a small fee. Parking is available in RFK Lot 6 for a fee (carpooling encouraged).

WHY: The Festival is a benefit for Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region who has worked to inspire and educate disadvantaged youth and young adults in the DC region for over 15 years through hands-on education and job training using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” As managing operator of the island, Living Classrooms will also allocate much of the proceeds to the ongoing maintenance/restoration of the islands as a recreational and educational space, where it regularly engages local youth in hands-on environmental education programs. www.livingclassrooms.org.
