“Dear PoPville,

Curious in our (almost, pls don’t come for me) post-COVID environment in DC, if there are places aside from Yards Park where we can catch live music on Fridays? Jazz in the Garden seems to still be on pause. Thanks!”

Thanks to Tom and Michael for sending: “I saw the sign and paint come down on the New Vegas Lounge — after 50 years, is she done??”

I don’t think so, more likely just a bit of a sprucing up. I say this because their website is still live (“OPEN FRIDAY & SATURDAY 9:00 PM DOORS”), their phone works (though it went to voicemail when I called), they posted to their Instagram and Facebook, a few days ago.

So I’m guessing they’re just going with a new paint job. Stay tuned.

“Dear PoPville,

I recently retired after nearly 40 years working in hospitality in this amazing city of ours. I am planning to move overseas but would very much like to leave “a mark” behind me. I am hoping to find someone with space for a mural, as well as an artist to collaborate with.

Specifically, I would like to honor the musician, Gil Scott Heron. Gil lived and taught, recorded, and performed in DC for ten of his most influential years in this town. (more…)

Ed. Note: What could possibly go wrong with giant chess pieces on a roof

Thanks to Jason for sending: “Mayflower Club coming to former Dirty Martini location”

Mayflower Club’s Facebook says:

“Our story begins in 1933, during the waning days of Prohibition. Police raided the speakeasy housed in this building, seizing large quantities of illegal alcohol and arresting the proprietor, Zachariah “Zebbie” Goldsmith.

Today, 1223 Connecticut Ave., just south of Dupont Circle, is soon to be the home to The Mayflower Club and Zebbie’s Garden a multi-level restaurant, bar, and lounge. (more…)
