Ed. Note: What could possibly go wrong with giant chess pieces on a roof

From a press release:

“One of Washington, DC’s largest, most expansive rooftops for outdoor dining, drinking and safe socializing, Hi-Lawn has just introduced several exciting post-pandemic offerings, making it DC’s ultimate warm-weather destination this season. The scenic astroturf-covered green space is now open seven days a week, with live music, giant lawn games, weekly themed nights, and new summer food and drink menus.

Located on the Rooftop at Union Market, the sprawling space (with a capacity of 1040) is the perfect place to spread out, have a picnic and take in the views, outfitted with picnic tables and colorful patio umbrellas, designated picnic spaces on artificial turf, neon-hued lawn lounge furniture, and wood decking with an artfully-designed shipping container bar dispensing draft cocktails, spiked seltzers, craft beers by the can and bucket, and affordable, well-curated wines.

SUMMER MENUS
Hi-Lawn is embracing the season of picnics and cookouts by offering fare ideal for outdoor group gatherings.

Picnic snacks abound, such as homemade Onion Dip & Chips; a Mezze Platter of dips + dippers like whipped feta, hummus, pita, pickled carrots, roasted olives and crisp cucumber; a Charcuterie + Cheese plate of aged country ham, aged cheddar, nuts, jam, cornichons and crackers; and a mai tai vinaigrette-dressed Arugula Salad with avocado, chevre, berries and toasted almonds.

Guests can escape to the shore without leaving DC, with seaside bites like the Brown Butter Mayo Lobster Roll spiked with shrimp, plus celeriac, lime and scallions in a split top roll; Fried Clam Strips with yum yum sauce and lemon; and Grilled Mahi Sandwich with avocado, celeriac slaw and chipotle lime aioli on a Martin’s potato roll.

THEMED NIGHTS + ACTIVITIES
Hi-Lawn has just launched a series of weekly themed nights, including Live Music Thursdays and Get Nauti Mondays!

Every Thursday from 7:30-9:30pm, local musicians are performing Live on the Lawn, with a lineup ranging from funk & soul grooves from Jarreau Williams, to high energy cover band The Perfectionists, to retro hits from Cathy D Music. Local concerts are free to attend, but reservations are recommended.

And every Monday from 3-10pm, Hi-Lawn is hosting a nautical-themed deck party featuring seaside specials (freshly-shucked oysters, fried clam strips and lobster rolls), plus discounted Champagne (in bottle, magnum and half-bottle formats) and buckets of beer.

Come mid-July, Hi-Lawn will launch Games We Play Tuesdays featuring communal lawn games, such as giant chess, Jenga, cornhole and more, plus themed specials for the night.

Hi-Lawn is open 7 days a week, Monday-Thursday from 3pm-10pm, Friday-Saturday from 12pm-12am, and Sunday from 12pm-8pm. Hi-Lawn takes both reservations via Resy, and walk-ins.
