Thanks to a reader for sending:

“A crew was chipping off this mural at Swann and 14th NW this morning.”

This is the classic mural on the side of 1830 14th Street, NW the former home of L and N thrift store, Arts@1830 gallery and the future home of an Amsterdam Falafel, a couple blocks south of U Street.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the new Marvin Gaye Mural at 7th and S Street, NW in Shaw. Looks awesome. It was done by the prolific muralist Aniekan Udofia and sponsored by Heineken. We’ll be looking at the three other murals sponsored by Heineken throughout the week.

12th and U Street, NW

A few weeks ago I wondered what was going on with the Duke Ellington mural that was removed from the True Reformer building at 12th and U St, NW in May 2012. We were told that restoration would take about a year. Turns out it’s a bit more complicated. A spokeswoman for D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities tells me:

“The Commission is working with local Artist Byron Peck to create a replica of his Duke Ellington mural on U Street. The Commission looked at all of the options for preservation. The structure behind the mural was eroding. The best option is a replica and Peck has agreed. The goal is to have an unveiling and installation by Duke Ellington’s birthday in April 2014.”

Back in May 2012 the iconic Duke Ellington mural was removed from the True Reformer building at 12th and U St, NW. At that time the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities issued a press release saying:

“Two weeks ago, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities took the first steps in restoring the famous G. Byron Peck mural of Duke Ellington on the True Reformer Building (1200 U Street, NW) to its original condition.

The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities hired the fine arts services company, ARTEX, to remove, store and prep the mural for damage assessment. Restoration of the mural may take up to one year.”

An email sent to the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities asking for an update was not returned. Hopefully the great artwork by G. Byron Peck will be fully restored soon.
