“Dear PoPville,

Doug has crossed the River! I run a restaurant in the Courthouse area of Arlington and my host told me some Doctor asked to speak with me. Almost immediately I felt I recognized him, and it took about 30 seconds into his story about being a neighbor and a former “regular” of ours, that his assistant had his car and he left his wallet, phone and keys in there and was having trouble getting in touch with him. He said the host was nice enough to let him use the phone but he had no luck. My first response was to just say “Doug?”, to which he said, “huh?”. I asked how I could help him and he asked for some free beer, to which my response was, “that’s not going to happen, Doug”. Read More

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Bowser released the following statement on Amazon HQ2:

Amazon in Arlington is a win for DC. We will continue preparing residents with the skills and knowledge they need for the jobs of the future, including at Amazon.

“We know that this opportunity will push us to work together on our biggest challenges like improving our transportation and infrastructure. We must continue our investment in safety, reliability, and capacity at Metro and find ways to enhance service, including late night service.

“We call on elected leaders in the region to come together and agree to a concrete goal for affordable and workforce housing. DC has been leading the way on affordable housing with unprecedented investment in preservation and production. In four years, we have invested $471 million with just one of our locally funded tools, the Housing Production Trust Fund.

“We offer our congratulations to Arlington and the Commonwealth of Virginia. We have always said that we would put our region and its people up against any other in the world. And as the federal government slows its growth, today’s announcement demonstrates that the technology sector will continue to flourish in our region as our economy diversifies.”

From Amazon:

“Amazon today announced that we have selected New York City and Arlington, Virginia, as the locations for our new headquarters. Amazon will invest $5 billion and create more than 50,000 jobs across the two new headquarters locations, with more than 25,000 employees each in New York City and Arlington. The new locations will join Seattle as the company’s three headquarters in North America. In addition, Amazon announced that it has selected Nashville for a new Center of Excellence for its Operations business, which is responsible for the company’s customer fulfillment, transportation, supply chain, and other similar activities. The Operations Center of Excellence in Nashville will create more than 5,000 jobs.

The new Washington, D.C. metro headquarters in Arlington will be located in National Landing, and the New York City headquarters will be located in the Long Island City neighborhood in Queens. Read More
