Earlier this week we reported that Barkada, a New Natural Wine Bar, would be opening just off U Street:

“Barkada, a Filipino slang word meaning a group of friends…”

The first comment from Camille was:

“Nothing about this wine bar is Filipino. Absolutely NOTHING.

Interesting that they’d choose to use this word yet they don’t have anything remotely connected (socially, culturally, historically) to the country it originated from.

Wine, cheese, charcuterie, tinned fish?… none of their offerings are Filipino.”

Back in 2012 Solly’s expanded into the old Madjet restaurant space. They will be returning to their original size, when they first opened in 2006, which includes their original bar, the upstairs space and of course their great patio:

11th and U Street, NW

Solly’s patio is currently open everyday from 4-11pm!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: (more…)
