Barkada, a New Natural Wine Bar, Opening just off U Street Tomorrow (Wed., July 29)

1939 12th Street, NW

From a press release:

“Barkada, a new natural wine bar, owned and operated by Primrose’s Sebastian Zutant with long-time friends Anthony Aligo & Nick Guglietta, and Nathan Fisher, will open its doors on July 29, 2020 at 1939 12th Street NW, Washington DC.

Zutant, who currently owns and operates Primrose and previously worked at The Red Hen, Komi, Proof, and Rasika, partnered with the industry newcomers to build their dream wine bar. Barkada, a Filipino slang word meaning a group of friends, will have a unique list of over 60 natural wines from around the world and a food program featuring a selection of curated imports and local products. In addition to a range of cheese and charcuterie, Barkada will showcase tinned fish and seafood platters for the adventurous, along with light fare and sandwiches. On the weekends, Barkada will also have breakfast sandwiches for brunch from 12pm-3pm;

reservations are encouraged.

“Barkada’s wine program features an eclectic mix of interesting producers from around the world. The wines are all low intervention in practice, showcasing hands off wine making techniques,” says Zutant. “The food, while traditional in wine bars, features both local and global talent. From simple salads and charcuterie, to imported canned seafood, there is still plenty to choose from.”

The space has a modern yet comfortable feel, with just twelve seats at the bar, and velvet chairs throughout the dining room. The goal is to emulate the warm, intimate feeling of sitting in someone’s living room. Starting tomorrow, seating will focus on the outside tables to comply with social distancing guidelines and to protect guests and staff.

“The concept of the space was to gather friends together in a close-knit environment,” says Aligo. “Unfortunately, that cannot be done now but we are committed to the safety of our guests and staff while also allowing people to still get together. Despite it all, we are very excited to open and provide a new space for the neighborhood.”

Barkada will begin opening Wednesdays-Fridays from 5pm-10pm, Saturdays from 12pm-10pm, and Sundays from 12pm-9pm.”
