After receiving an email, I decided to check out the U Street Farmers Market again. Boy, am I glad I did. There was an incredible selection of apples, tomatoes and they even had quinces. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a quince before in my life. (more…)
Thanks to Bill from Petworth News for alerting me to the newest bar to hit U Street. The bar that everyone has been waiting for, Marvin, is set for a soft opening tomorrow night. Marvin is located on 14th Street just north of U Street and is set to have a bit of a Belgian flavor. Why? Because the bar is named after Marvin Gaye who apparently spent a few years in Belgium. What has folks most excited is that this bar comes from the owner of Eighteenth St. Lounge, you know the Thievery Corporation guys. So get ready for the soft opening on Wed. night and I’ll see you there. And remember this is the bar Fritz, from the Washington Post Gurus, is most excited about it.
Hopefully it will be open this weekend…
So I’m craving my weekly meximelt when I pass this sign on 14th St. The Taco Bell sign has been obliterated and apparently so has the dining room. I thought the dining room was perfectly fine, I think I’d be happier if there was a sign saying “kitchen being remodeled”. At any rate we are fixing to have the nicest T Bell dining room in town…I just hope they finish soon. Damn, where else is there a Taco Bell in DC?
I’ve always noticed this really nice block of rowhomes on 13th and V. But when you take a closer look, you realize that there are no porches or stoops to hang out on. I thought to myself, man I need a haircut, then I thought to myself how is there no space to hang out front? So I wandered around back. (more…)
Walk through the door and get ready to be transplanted to 1952, no make that 1982 based on all the amazing photos surrounding this great restaurant. Maybe you are like me and have always known about this place, but have never had a chance to eat there. Let that no longer be an option – this is a must visit restaurant. I had the trout cakes with a side of pickled beets and mashed potatoes with gravy. Mmm, pickled beets and mashed potatoes and gravy… I left so full I thought I was going to explode. On top of the great food, the service was exceptional. These were among the nicest servers I’ve ever encountered in my life.
Perhaps making this experience sublime was spotting a photo of “Michael” from the classic tv show “Good Times”. Yeah that “Good Times”, you know – Keeping your head above water making your way to the top, temporary layoffs…
This is one of my favorites located above the U St. metro on 13th and U St. I dare anyone to disparage this one…
This used to be one of the best bars in the city located on U Street way before U Street was popping. I always loved the mural of Lenin that you can hardly make out today. It seems kind of sad. Why is this prime location left in such a state of disrepair?
but I spotted this one on S Street between 14th and 13th. It is made of wood and there is another larger sign, maybe a kind of memorial next to it. But this one obviously spoke to me. It reminds me of the Remaking Le Slum Historique mural on I think 9th Street in Shaw.

And I have to say it looks pretty good. They put some nice benches and chairs out that you can see in the picture. I took the opportunity to take a look at some of the model units for sale. Damn, some of them are pretty sweet. But you will pay for that sweetness prices range to the $500k for two bedrooms. The complex is gigantic but it seemed quite pleasant as I walked through it. So it got me thinking is it worth it to sacrifice size for location? It is pretty fantastic to be located right on 14th St. Thoughts?
Oh, another rumor I heard is that a Trader Joe’s may be going into the retail space of this building. Anyone else heard this rumor or even better can confirm it?
