This gas station on 14th Street, if memory serves, used to be a super sketchy gas station. It is the type of gas station were you are solicited between walking from your car and paying. I also seem to recall a buddy of mine getting robbed at this gas station in the middle of the day. Well, walking by the other day I happened to notice some super sweet condos practically right across the street. How is that going to work? I just don’t understand how it is possible to have a “luxury” condo right across the street from sketchville no matter how nice the condos are. As has been a theme for a while can someone please explain to me this seeming contradiction?

Holy cow, the gas station at 15th and U has Slush Puppies. I haven’t had one of the years in years. I thought for sure they went out of business. They are the gold standard of sugary frozen drinks. Slush puppie would be to Slurpie as Chateau Neuf de Pape would be to Mad Dog. (Ed note: I am assuming Chateau Neuf de Pape is good wine because it is from a Beastie Boys song.) Point is Slush Puppies are damn good and I can’t believe they still exist. I highly recommend Blue Raspberry.

Something went down around 6:30ish. As you can see there were tons of cop cars. When I went to inquire with a city worker (not a cop) if he knew what happened, he replied “yes, it is a police incident.” So I’m glad we got that all cleared up.

So I walked out of Taco Bell and came upon a lively game of street chess on 14th Street. And let me tell you – eating two meximelts while watching a lively game of street chess rivals a live Nats game any day of the week except Sunday of course.

I was very hesitant to post this entry. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Washington. Al Crostino, an Italian restaurant with a fantastic wine list and delicious food is located on U Street between 13th and 14th. The servers are the nicest, the chef cares, and the prosciutto is unbelievable. Normally, I like to keep secrets like this to myself but I have grown to like you guys so I thought I’d share. If you are going on a date this place is the best – you can impress without breaking your wallet. Plus you are in a fantastic location to go for drinks after dinner. The ravioli is my personal favorite but this is one of the few places where you really can’t go wrong with whatever you order. So thank me later after you try this place!
Great news to report from Ben’s Chili Bowl located between 12th and 13th on U Street. Washingtonian magazine reports that they “have their hands on the former nightclub next door and plan to turn it into a second location with a lounge-y vibe and hopefully, a liquor license.”

Everyone was quite favorable about this garden store last I wrote about it. I just walked by it again and noticed they have added an addition. It looks like a number of locusts are crawling up the wall. Aren’t locusts bad for gardens?

The U Street neighborhood is about to welcome what looks like a super cool cafe. Collage Cafe is located right next to St. Ex on 14th and T. Anyone know when it opens?
A friend of mine lives in the H Street corridor and naturally is eager to patronize their local pubs. I had the opportunity to join him last weekend. Now, many know that H Street and U Street share similar backgrounds in that both were ravaged during the 1968 riots. Let’s just say that U Street has rebounded a bit quicker. Now, don’t get me wrong the bars themselves on H Street are fantastic, they have almost every variety, chill, sports, martini, crazy themes etc. The problem that I had is that H Street in and of itself just isn’t a pleasant street to hang out on. I have no doubt that in 5 years it will be kickass but at the moment it has a little ways to go. Quite frankly it feels like some of the more unsavory parts of Georgia Ave. They both are going to improve it is just going to take time. Now if I lived in the H Street neighborhood I would be totally stoked. It is just that U Street is easily five years ahead of H Street. Also, if I lived in U Street/Columbia Heights/Petworth area I frankly don’t think it is worth the long journey to get to H Street, NE. One of the primary differences and benefits of U Street is that it has a fantastic restaurant scene which doesn’t yet exist on H Street. We shall discuss the topic again in a few years. So tell me, is there an H Street – U Street rivalry?
