Just saw this news from MPD:

“On Sunday, January 24, at approximately 3:30 am, a pedestrian was struck at 14th and U Streets, NW, by a hit and run vehicle.

The vehicle is described as a 2005 Toyota Camry, 4 doors, silver, with an unknown tag.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department on 202-727-9099.”

There was some discussion last week about the construction going on at 13th and U Streets, NW. I have confirmed one rumor with Kim Weeks the founder of Boundless Yoga. She writes:

“We plan to move in during the summer, and we’re expanding from our spot on the 1500 block of U Street to 2500 SF there at 13th/U, with two bright, sunny studios plus a space for Yoga Therapy and private yoga. We’ll be offering public yoga, private yoga, yoga training, Yoga Therapy, and energy healing!”

Now we just have to wait to see who takes over the first floor.

Puro Cafe is coming to 1529 Wisconsin Ave, NW. I asked a neighbor if she knew when it would open but she didn’t know the exact date. I’ll be sure to update when they officially open their doors.

And I was excited to see construction begin at the corner of 13th and U Streets, NW. I’m eager to see what tenants move in:

“Dear PoP,

I’m curious about two projects at 14th and Florida and wondered if you have heard anything about them. The Solea condo suddenly has some build-out activity taking place on its main level. Any word on who/what will be going in that space?”

Here’s the official word from Solea:

“The tenant at Solea is the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. They bought the entire 14th Street side of Solea and will be occupying the space by late spring/early summer. They’ve got a great fit-out planned with dynamic street-level engagement vis-à-vis signage, lighting, etc.”

I’ve always been a pretty big fan of LZ Restaurant located on Florida Ave. just west of 14th. I really enjoyed their gyros. Sadly the last 4 times I’ve walked by the space has been closed. Has anyone else noticed this? It was a pretty tough location that was a bit off the beaten path. I hope it’s just a temporary closing.

This is another reader request. It is located at the corner of 14th and Clifton Streets, NW:

The Craigslist ad says:

“Bright two bdrm and one bath apt. with roughly 990 sq ft. Lots of amenities including hardwood floors throughout, kitchen with dishwasher and lots of storage, ton of closet/storage space, south-facing balcony (comfy porch furniture included in rental), new track lighting in living room and hallway (all lighting on dimmers), new ceiling fans in the bedrooms, all windows recently replaced and zoned HV/AC wall units to help keep utility costs down.

There are new (and large) laundry facilities available for free in the building and easily accessible bike racks for easy storage and commuting.”

Does $2200 sound reasonable for this 2 bedroom?

This rental is located at 1920 10th Street, NW:

The Craigslist ad says:

“Recently renovated 1 bedroom apartment on the U St. corridor. This 1 bedroom apartment is located on the second floor and has recently refinished hardwood floors. This unit is spacious and has a lot of natural light”.

The reader writes:

“I found a Craigslist ad that I think would make a good Rental GDoN. I was kindof amazed at the price – $1250 for a 1br right by the U St Metro. I feel like there must be a catch…”

Is there a catch? Is $1250 for this location too good to be true?

1809 14th Street, NW

We visited Go Mama Go! back in June of ’08. From a press release from the owner:

“Go mama go!, the vibrant housewares, accessories and gift shop on 14th Street NW , will be closing its doors in the next few months, according to its owner, Jonathan Chudnoff.

Chudnoff attributes the closing to the twin blows of the general economic decline and the death of the store’s founder, Noi Chudnoff, whose dynamic spirit, creativity and personality were key ingredients in the store’s early success.”

I don’t think I’ll make this a regular feature unless folks want it. But walking down 13th just north of U Street I saw this rent sign and thought it was a pretty good deal. Though I really don’t know if I could live in a basement again. I lived in one once and never knew what time it was…

For this sweet location does this sound like a good deal – $1525 per month.
