2005 14th St, NW

Last month we learned that Marvin had expanded into the second floor of Blackbyrd located at 2005 14th St, NW just north of U Street. Turns out much bigger changes are in store for the first floor of Blackbyrd (which opened back in July 2011.) Blackbyrd is going to change names and become a Vietnamese Restaurant and Pho house headed by Executive Chef James Claudio and his Vietnamese grandmother, Lap Claudio.

The Claudios are currently finalizing the menu but you can “expect steaming bowls of pho, (Bun) pork over vermicelli, Bahn Mi and hand made spring rolls”. Additionally they will serve Tiki cocktails, created by Brendan Murphy, who will headline the beverage program. While the new restaurant is aiming to have a grand opening November 5 you can get a sneak peek of the new look over the next 2 weekends.

Dear PoPville,

I live off the U Street corridor with my hubby and two kids–5 and 1 1/2. We had our pumpkins, that my daughter lovingly picked from a pumpkin patch, outside (not yet carved) inside of our small fenced in yard. Someone stole all 4 of our pumpkins in broad daylight. I was so upset, I put up a sign saying “To the person who stole our pumpkins, we have a very sad 5 year old. Please return them.” Jump to 8:30 pm, my doorbell rang.

There was a woman in a wheelchair–had to be in her 60s or 70s – who read our sign and was so upset, she went to the store to buy a pumpkin for my daughter!! A huge pumpkin! That this poor woman had to carry from the store in her wheelchair to our house! I was taken back by such a kind gesture. I told her I couldn’t accept, but she insisted, and I asked if I could please, please give her something (as I didn’t mean for someone ELSE to replace the pumpkins!) and she just said that I should do something nice for someone else.

My daughter told the story last night to her grandparents. When they asked if she knew who the woman was she said, “an angel.”

Thought it was amazing! Faith in humanity restored.

From Contemporary Wing:

This October, Washington D.C., joins international cities like Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, London, Hong Kong and New York in welcoming one of JR’s projects. JR brings UNFRAMED, a project started in Vevey, Switzerland, Grottaglie, Italy, and São Paulo, Brazil, to Washington DC. UNFRAMED is a urban project in which JR uses images from famous and anonymous photographers and reinterprets them by taking them out of context, giving the history of photography a new meaning.

JR covered a building at 1401 T Street, NW with celebrated Civil Rights Photographer Ernest Wither’s (Memphis, 1922 – 2007) image of the “I Am Man” demonstration, the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike, the last march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. before his assassination in April 1968.

The installation happened on October 9 – 10th.

Ed. Note: In Jan. 2012 we heard that Stubs Kitchen and Wine would be coming to the building at 1401 T Street, NW.
