1346 T St, NW

Dear PoPville,

Just heard Cafe Collage is closing today from the woman who runs the place. Sad news. Not too surprising, though; I think most of the business came from people camping out all day with their laptops. The side street location didn’t help, and I always thought that having more pastries/more light inside would have been good for them.

We last judged Cafe Collage, located at 14th and T St, NW just east of St. Ex, back in Nov. 2011. Do you think a cafe can survive in this location?

1931 14th St, NW

Before Black and Orange opened on 14th St, NW just south of U Street, there was concern that outdoor seating would obstruct pedestrians on the sidewalk. Looks like there was a bit of a compromise, instead of the original 40 seats requested, I saw only 12 seats out front. There is plenty of room left for pedestrians to pass on the sidewalk out front. Do you think this is a good number or should they be able to add one more?

Marvin, 2007 14th St, NW has expanded into the 2nd floor space of Blackbyrd at 2005 14th St, NW – from Marvin’s liquor license amendment:

“Expansion of the operation on the second floor to the adjacent building at 2005 14th Street, NW (additional 87 seats).”

The folks at Marvin tell me:

“The original lounge has been updated and converted to a private dining room and the new lounge, the former 2nd floor of Blackbyrd will be the home of the DJ booth. So we can now book private dinners up to 40 people; host late night events and created a better flow to the roofdeck spaces.”

Sweet.

I can’t believe it has already been five years since Marvin first opened at 14th and U Street.

“Dear PoPville,

I saw this sign today at Harrison Rec center (1330 V St, NW). Do you know what renovations they’re doing? The playground could really use some TLC!”

The Friends of Harrison Recreation Center update in an email:

“Washington Gas will be doing some upgrades to the building and grounds (new energy-efficient appliances, a solar panel, some painting and landscaping) in the coming weeks.

DPR is still assessing whether Harrison will be eligible for new playground equipment in FY13 (centers who have the highest need will be identified).”

11th and U St, NW

The folks at Solly’s tell me they’ll be grilling out on the patio this Sunday starting at 12:30. You can catch the games upstairs or at the bar. On the grill from 13th Street Meats:

“Burgers $6, Hot Dogs $3, Wings $5, Half Smokes $8 with all the fixings plus Chili.”

And in more good news their expansion should open in 3-4 weeks.

14th and T St, NW

Back in July 2011 we learned that Matchbox would be moving into the former Arena Stage building at the corner of 14th and T St, NW across from St. Ex. The scaffolding has been removed and you can really see the building returning to life:

Lots of progress on the inside too, remember the space was completely gutted:

And this always blows me away, check out what 14th and T Street looked like in 1986. The Matchbox will be going into the building on the corner that has the sign – “All Power to the Imagination”:

From a press release:

The National Symphony Orchestra will make U Street, Howard University, Shaw, and Logan Circle the focus of its free community engagement activities in January 2013. Between January 8 and 14, members of the NSO will break into small ensembles to perform chamber music and educational activities as requested by approximately 20 community organizations. The NSO’s performances during this period will be free of charge, thanks to a gift from Irene Pollin.

Among the partners are Howard University, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of its music department; D.C. Public Schools; the U Street Neighborhood Association; Florida Avenue Baptist Church; and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

The majority of the schedule will be determined by the community itself, with the partner organizations gathering requests from their neighborhoods. An opening event on January 8 is tentatively planned at the Howard Theatre. More information will be available in early November.

There are two other key activities determined as the framework for the week. No visit to this area would be complete without a performance at Lincoln Theatre, where Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, and D.C.’s own Duke Ellington have performed. The NSO has planned a special family day for Saturday, January 12, 2013. The Women’s Committee for the National Symphony Orchestra will present the ever-popular “Instrument Petting Zoo” prior to an NSO performance of the enduring children’s favorite Peter and the Wolf led by Assistant Conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl.

The culminating event in the will be a concert by the full NSO at Howard University’s Cramton Auditorium, January 14, at 7 p.m. which will be led by NSO Music Director Christoph Eschenbach and NSO Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke. The celebrated soprano Jessye Norman, a graduate of Howard
University, will perform, and the program will include the Washington premiere of George Walker’s Sinfonia No. 4, co-commissioned by the NSO. Walker, who was born in D.C., gave his first public recital at the age of 14 in Howard University’s Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, and attended the Junior Division of Howard University’s Music Department.

The 2013 community engagement activities are made possible in part by a generous gift from Irene Pollin.

NSO in Your Neighborhood U St./Howard/Shaw follows on the heels of last year’s successful event in Columbia Heights. Over the course of five days, members of the NSO took part in more than two dozen events at Columbia Heights schools, churches, community centers, restaurants, and bars. The full orchestra concert took place at the Columbia Heights Educational Campus.
