2005 14th St, NW

At long last the Hanoi House Vietnamese Restaurant and Pho House opens in the former Blackbyrd space tonight at 2005 14th St, NW just north of U Street. We checked out the menu here.

From the owners:

Hanoi House was created to share the traditional northern Vietnamese cuisine of the Claudio family with our city. The menu was created by Executive Chef James Claudio and his grandmother, Lap Claudio, who taught him the art of Vietnamese cooking in their family home.

In addition to our Vietnamese classics, our cocktail program was created by master mixologist, Brendan Murphy (The Gibson). Both food and drink are enjoyed in a relaxed and beautiful setting, designed by Joe Reza and the owners. Like the Gibson, the music program was created by Eric Hilton (Thievery Corporation).

14th and T St, NW

A couple of weeks ago we noted how awesome the renovated Matchbox was looking at 14th and T St, NW across the street from St. Ex. I’m happy to say it is looking equally, if not more awesome on the inside. And they’re opening Friday. From a press release:

matchboxfoodgroup is thrilled to announce its newest location at 1901 T Street NW, set to open Friday, November 30, just over a year after announcing plans for the space. The new kitchen will be under the direction of Executive Chef Jeffrey Richardson, who has been promoted from his previous role as sous chef at the group’s Capitol Hill restaurant. General Manager Michelle Hebert will shift her talents from Assistant Manager at the group’s Rockville, MD restaurant to her role leading the new 14th Street operations.

matchbox 14th Street will be open for dinner daily from 4pm until 10:30pm Sunday through Thursday and until 11:30pm on weekends. Weekend brunch will start at 10am with all day service. The menu will feature many “go-to” favorites like 3.6.9 mini burgers and spicy meatball pizza that guests have grown to love. In addition, a selection of popular dishes from other locations will be offered alongside Chef Richardson’s original entrees like braised beef short ribs with turmeric vegetables and fingerling potatoes in a coconut curry sauce, and seared sea scallops with pork belly risotto.

The 25 foot bar features 23 beers as well as eight wines and one prosecco on tap – one of the largest selections of draught wines found in Washington. Seating for 25 winds along the long bar past not one, but two of matchbox’s signature wood-fired pizza ovens, enclosed by a pizza bar. Every seat in the house has a dramatic view of the three-story tall exposed brick façade.

Design elements new to matchboxfoodgroup include striking exposed rustic wood staircases that connect three levels of seating supported by original exposed girders with each level overlooking the lower. A cantilevered recycled wood chef’s table overlooks the kitchen offering unique re-mastered tree trunk stool seating for eight at the rear of the restaurant. Two floating box tables offer a more private experience, suspended alone high above the main bar between the second and third floors.

This matchbox will also have a permanent “to-go” station near the back of the restaurant complete with its own entrance on T Street. The full menu will be available for phone-in and online carry out orders. A large patio will stretch the length of the T Street façade, dotted with seasonal landscaping and modern brushed metal fixtures. Additional seating around an inviting fire pit sits directly on the corner of 14th & T.

The building on 14th Street was erected as a bowling alley and billiards hall in 1907, became an automobile showroom in 1920, transformed into Club Bali, a well known Jazz club featuring artists like Etta James in 1943, and was most recently the rehearsal hall for the Arena Stage theatre company. matchboxfoodgroup has embraced the building’s past incorporating as many historical features as possible to preserve its spirit, all the while staying true to the rustic vintage style for which matchbox is known.

Check out how awesome the inside turned out:

1342 U Street, NW

Dear PoPville,

I was happy to see that DC started putting up signs on 11th Street (between W and U, at least) that restrict parking to certain times — which in theory should make it easier for residents to park during peak times. But I was confused/surprised by the times that are covered by the restrictions (see attached pic):

Monday thru Friday, 7am-8:30pm.

Having lived at 11/V for 4 years, the hardest times to find parking is weekday and Saturday evenings from 7p-midnight (nightlife), and Sunday from 11a-5p (church). These times are barely covered by the new regulations, per the signs. (Also, side-note: the church-goers tend to double park, park in bike lanes, park at bus stops, etc — and I’ve NEVER seen DC parking enforcement come around on a Sunday.)

Do you know what is up with this?

DDOT issued a press release that says:

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to complete the implementation of the Enhanced Residential Permit Parking (ERPP) program in Ward 1 over the next few weeks. The ERPP program protects parking for neighborhood residents by designating one side of the street resident only parking from 7 am to 8:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

New signage for the ERPP program will be posted on blocks with traditional Residential Permit Parking (RPP) restrictions in ANCs 1A, 1B and 1C (ANC 1D opted out of the ERPP program). One side of the street will have RPP restrictions, and the other side will have enhanced restrictions.

RPP provides residents, with a residential parking permit, the ability to park on streets in their permitted area. Non permit holders may park in these areas for a maximum of two hours. By contrast, only residents may park on a curb with ERPP restrictions during the posted hours of enforcement, and an ERPP violation is a towable offence.

DDOT is implementing legislation sponsored by Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham and passed by the DC Council earlier this year. Crews will be working on an accelerated schedule to install about 2,500 new signs on approximately 550 neighborhood blocks included in the program. The installation will begin on or about November 17.

Anyone else think the program should be extended through the weekends?

14th and Belmont St, NW

A reader sends huge news about the retail spaces in the new Capitol View building from the Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association:

Capitol View on 14th, 2420 14th Street, NW, planned uses for retail space – George Levin of UDR and Chris Wilkinson of commercial broker JBG Rosenfeld Realty reported that the building is nearing completion, has eight retail spaces totaling 16,110 SF ranging from 1,008 SF to 3,977 SF, some of which can be consolidated to larger units at build-out, and 225 residential units; UDR is close to signing a lease with an upscale grocer for a 4,952 SF space on the corner of 14th and Belmont Streets; for spaces north of the residential entrance on 14th Street they are in discussions with a bank and drycleaner; and a mid/high-end restaurant has expressed interest in the commercial unit at the corner of 14th and Chapin Street and the space at the corner of 14th and Florida Avenue in the View 14 building across the street, which is also owned by UDR.

Any guesses on who the “upscale grocer” could be? Maybe something like Dean & Deluca?
