We last checked on the Lima building back in Feb. 2013. It’s nearly completed bricked up now. Part of me really hopes they’ll somehow figure out a way to keep the old auto repair sign:

Back in Jan. we heard some scuttlebutt that Immortal Beloved Hair Salon would be moving into Muleh’s retail space at at 1831 14th Street, NW. Last week Muleh quietly opened in their new space a few storefronts away at 1821 14th St, NW in the former Lux Design Store. Looking good:

A couple weeks ago we noted a Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt was coming to the retail space of the Moderno building at 12th and U St, NW. Signage is up and they’re hiring. Thanks to all who sent emails.
919 U Street, NW
Tacos out, German beer garden in! Back in June 2011 we first learned that a spot called El Ray (not to be confused with the Elroy) would be coming to the vacant lot next to Dodge City on U Street. Originally we heard there would be a taco stand but I spoke with one of the owners (same owners as Marvin, Gibson, Chez Billy, Satellite Room, Hanoi House) who tells me plans are for a German beer garden that will be built out of shipping containers. Tacos are obviously out and they now plan on serving German sausages etc. Food will be served “dim sum style” and they plan on having a take out window on U Street. No word on the name yet but if all goes well they hope to open in Fall 2013. Stay tuned.
928 U Street, NW
Jamaican Joe’s opened up at 928 U St, NW back in Aug. 2011. We judged them in Dec. 2012. I stopped by yesterday and was told they’ll be closed for about three weeks while the inside gets “upscaled”. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
