Back in May we were told plans for tacos had switched to plans for a German beer garden at the vacant lot not next to Dodge City on U Street. This is from the same owners as Marvin, Gibson, Chez Billy, Satellite Room, Hanoi House. Well, plans are back to tacos and the space is no longer an empty lot:

I’m told they are now shooting for a November opening.

Looks like they’ll have a takeout window too:

From what I understand this taqueria will have a mighty fine selection of craft beer too. Stay tuned.

It’s been a while since we had an update on the status of the new restaurant from the owner of Thai-Xing coming to 9th Street by the 9:30 Club. I finally ran into some workers last weekend and they said if all goes well they should be able to open in November. I get asked quite frequently – ‘what new restaurant/bar am I most looking forward to opening?’ – well, this is it. Here’s hoping everything runs smoothly from here!

Sad news about a legendary presence at the 9:30 Club – Josh Burdette has passed away at age 36. Back in Januarly 2010 Danny Harris did a profile titled Josh on the Little Pieces of the Puzzle – here are Josh’s words again:

“I was technically born in D.C., at Sibley Hospital, but I grew up in Kensington, Maryland and have lived there all my life. While Maryland is home, D.C. is home, too. D.C. has always been a big part of my life. As a kid, I came down to the museums. As I got older, I started going to the 9:30 Club, in the old location at 930 F Street Northwest, to see shows. My first show at the club was Shudder to Think. I don’t know exactly when it was, but probably sometime in high school. My sister was dating a guy who took us down to the show. From then on, I went to shows at 9:30 whenever I could. This was a really unique place. I had been to see the 80’s and early 90′s hair bands at Merriweather Post Pavilion and the Cap Center, but this place was simply hundreds of sweaty, dirty people going crazy. It was a nice change of pace and there was something about it that just spoke to me. I knew that when I was old enough, I wanted to get a job here.

“When I started at the University of Maryland, my parents gave me a hard time about getting a job. In the student newspaper, there was an ad looking for campus security staff with the words ‘size or experience a plus.’ I had no experience whatsoever, but I went in and got hired because I was big. I’ve always been bigger than everyone else. When you are the biggest guy around, you can either be a bully or go in the opposite direction and develop a slow fuse. I made a conscious decision as a young person to not abuse my size. Hurting someone is the last thing that I want to do. It turned out this was a good mindset for this work. Remember, we are not bouncers, we are door staff here. (more…)

Big news from U Street Dirt:

“We’ve just confirmed that 1438 U Street – the building that once housed “Cada Vez” and several other ventures that never really took hold – is being purchased by the Indian embassy for use as an Indian cultural center.”

It’s been a while since we had an update on the Old Station 9 space, glad to see this prime, long vacant space get a new tenant!

Next up on awesome DPR park renovations – Harrison Playground and rec center:

“The design for Harrison plays on the musical history of neighboring U Street, featuring musical themes in the walkways and play spaces and in a musical instrument-themed mist station, designed to keep kids cool in the summer. In addition to updating the equipment for younger children and older children, DPR and DGS will install a multi-purpose backstop on the small sport court; the backstop includes a soccer goal and a basketball rim! Visitors of all ages will be able to relax on new seating: a seat wall around the water feature and picnic benches under the trees that are currently outside of the fence, but will be included in the space in the redesign.”

DPR tells me that the opening is “literally days away”!

Just got an update from DPR – it’s opening tomorrow afternoon! (more…)
