I don’t believe they are legal (unless registered with a motorcycle license maybe?) but def. not uncommon either – we last heard about them on H Street, NE in February. Though normally they’re on the streets and not the sidewalks.

“The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a person of interest in connection to a first degree sexual assault while armed and robbery, which occurred in the 1600 block of 3rd Street, Northwest.
On Sunday, April 13, 2014, at approximately 4:00 am, an adult male was walking in the area when he approached an unknown male and asked him for directions. The suspect guided the victim to a nearby alley where he produced a handgun, sexually assaulted the victim, and took his property before fleeing.
The suspect is described as a black male, wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt, armed with a dark-colored handgun.
Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411. DC Crime Solvers currently offers a reward of up to $1,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for an assault committed in the District of Columbia.”

A reader sends this wild shot from North Capitol and New York Ave, NW around 4:45pm Friday afternoon:
“Black sedan flipped over and leaning on guardrail of the lane that takes traffic from NY Ave to southbound N. Cap. Couldn’t tell what happened. Didn’t see another car that was involved. Paramedics had been there for a few minutes. I could see the second and third ambulance fighting traffic on NY and N. Cap to get to the incident.”
This incident follows Thursday’s stabbing at North Capitol and Florida Ave, NE.
