1843 7th Street, NW

A couple of weeks ago we learned about Mockingbird Hill coming to Shaw from Derek Brown. At that time I wasn’t sure exactly where in the new construction on 7th Street it would be located. Now they’ve applied for a liquor license at 1843 7th Street, NW. It says:

“A bar focusing on Spanish sherry wine and Spanish & American hams. Other bar snacks will be served. Total number of seats is 53.”

Stay tuned for an anticipated May opening.

From a press release:

1905 Bistro & Bar is pleased to officially announce that Chef Joel Hatton – formerly of Shaw’s Tavern & Leopold’s Café in DC – has taken over the back of house duties as Executive Chef. Since joining the team at the end of January, the South Carolina native has put a definitive fingerprint on the restaurant, and plans to re-launch the brunch program this weekend with an entirely new menu.

For now, the new brunch menu will be available on Sundays from 11 AM – 3 PM, and features a mix of brunch staples along with a rotating selection of weekly specials. Featured items on the new menu include citrus Greek yogurt with house-made granola and strawberries ($6); chicken and waffle with cayenne honey ($12); truffled grits and pork belly with a sunnyside-up egg and scallions ($12); and an angus beef burger with Swiss cheese and balsamic onions on brioche roll with pickles and salad ($14). Egg options include a three-egg omelette with field greens ($12), a two eggs any style platter with toast and breakfast potatoes ($9), and soft scrambled eggs with cherry tomatoes, aged cheddar and a brioche roll ($10).

The bar is even getting in on the fun during brunch with bottomless options of Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and a Specialty Cocktail of the season for $15. Single glasses of each are also available for $7-$8. There is also a Beer-Mosa for $7, which is a blend of Avery White Rascal and orange juice.

Chef Hatton also has made significant changes to the restaurant’s dinner menu, adding bar snacks and a special Mussels Night on Tuesday nights. The Tuesday Night Mussel Night special includes a bowl of mussels incorporating a local beer in the broth, frites and a can/bottle of beer of your choice for $15. He is also working on a series of beer dinners, beginning next month in collaboration with DC Brau. More details to come!

9th and N St, NW

This morning I posted a mural from 9th and N St, NW and some commenters mentioned the development from CAS Riegler coming to 1250 9th St, NW. CAS Riegler’s website says:

1250 9th Street is a 64,500 square foot, urban in-fill, mixed-use development project located in the heart of Washington, DC’s rapidly expanding 9th Street Corridor surrounded by three of the city’s largest developments. At completion, the project will contain a total of 70 residential units and approximately 8,200 square feet of ground floor retail one block away from the Mount Vernon/ 7th Street Convention Center Metro station. The development will be four levels of residential plus a penthouse level with separate townhomes and the ground level retail can accommodate two full- service restaurants. 1250 9th Street lies at the Southwest corner of 9th and N Streets, NW in the Shaw neighborhood at the convergence of Mount Vernon and Gallery Place. The site is partially occupied by a three story building constructed in the 1920’s. It is considered to be a contributing historic structure and will therefore be incorporated into the design of the new development.

1250 9th Street offers direct access and convenience to several popular amenities in the DC metro area along with easy access to major employment centers downtown DC and the rest of the metro area. Construction is scheduled to commence 1Q 2013 with a projected delivery in 2Q 2014.

Dear PoPville,

I live on 10th street near P street and I was wondering if you have ever seen an artist rendering of the Market at O Street that has shot out of the ground at breakneck pace.

You can read more about (and see a few more renderings of) the CityMarket at O project from Roadside Development here. And like you said, we’ll probably see the finished product in the near future!

Thanks to all who sent links about this huge news coming to Shaw. The Post’s Tom Sietsema shares the great details:

Smitten by trips to southern Spain in recent years, Derek Brown, one of the region’s top drinks authorities, is planning to replicate some of his experiences with a new bar here at home. Mockingbird Hill, expected to open in May at 1843 Seventh St. NW. in Shaw, will have a narrow but intriguing focus: lots of sherries and abundant hams, or “nibbling rather than dining,” Brown says, distinguishing his Spanish vision from that of Washington’s popular tapas restaurants, Estadio and Jaleo.

Another reader notes the emergence of a possible Sherry trend in our future…

More info on Mockingbird Hill as they get closer to opening.

From MPD:

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District Vice Unit along with detectives from the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division and agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced the arrest of nine individuals following a months-long investigation into violence and drug dealing in the Shaw community. Charges include firearms violations, drug distribution and robbery.

During the course of this investigation crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and other evidence associated with these crimes were seized. Police served search warrants in various sections of the District of Columbia including the Shaw area near 8th and R Streets NW, where the group was based. Investigations are ongoing as MPD continues to address citizens’ complaints of loitering and drug dealing.

“This is significant for this community as many of the suspects who were charged did not reside in that neighborhood, but loitered there and committed violent crimes,” said Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier. “This operation is part of the Metropolitan Police Department’s continued commitment to reduce crime in our neighborhoods.”
