“Dear PoPville,

I live near Blagden Alley. Within the last couple of month’s I’ve seen prostitutes on several occasions hanging around seemingly looking for business. They just started construction a few doors down from us and now they’re around more frequently. This morning on my way to work there were 3 on the corner of 10th and N and a few interested construction workers walking by. I walked by a cop parked over by 12th and told him, and he drove off in their direction. Not sure what he can do if they’re not actually transacting, but hopefully will scare both parties into thinking twice before coming back to that corner. Is there anything else I could do in situations like this, especially if I didn’t happen to walk by a cop? I don’t know if 9-1-1 is an appropriate option as there is really nothing illegal going on with them standing around. Just not something we like to see in the mornings or at any time of the day, especially in our own neighborhoods. I’m wondering if other people have experienced similar situations and how they’ve handled them?”

I started hearing rumors about Duffy’s abrupt closure around 4pm today and sadly have now confirmed from Duffy’s owner – Andy Duffy:

Duffy’s will be closing its doors tonight at midnight. We just could not make it out of the financial hole we got in the first several years we were open. I would like to thank all of you who have supported us over the years. I have met some truly wonderful people. I also would like to thank my staff, they are the best.

Tonight we open at 6pm and all drinks / beers will be $5. We will have free wings while they last. Come by and enjoy one last evening.

From a press release:

“Right Proper Brewing Company in Shaw [624 T Street, NW] is pleased to announce Jim Jeffords as its new Executive Chef. Jim comes to Right Proper from Evening Star Café in Alexandria, where he has been Executive Chef for the past three years.

“Jim comes from the South and from a farming background, which squares sort of creepily with the farm-fresh food with a Southern accent that comes out of our kitchen,” said Thor Cheston, co-owner of Right Proper. “We are excited to have him as part of our team. At the same time, we’re really sorry to say goodbye to Chef Robert Cain, but he’s going to open a resort in Belize—we can only have so much sympathy for the guy.” (more…)

On Sunday morning we learned of a shooting that took place in the 1600 block of 7th Street, NW around 11pm Saturday night. Frightening details emerge from a couple of twitter conversations yesterday

@UponAMountain tweeted:

“Gunshots in Shaw, near Dacha. Everyone at Dacha on the ground.”

“police searching for casings. Shooter on run. Target was folks in car.”

@nicoleshea tweeted:

“we heard gunshots, then a man (I believe the bouncer) yelled for everyone to get down.”

@UponAMountain responded:

“man yelling for folks to get/stay down was a teacher who had completed emergency training. Huge asset.”

Lots of folks have already heard that a new restaurant called Dabney is coming to one of these rowhouses on 9th Street in front of Blagden Alley. The Washington Post reported:

“On Oct. 14, Langhorne and Zink officially sealed a deal with Douglas Development to lease a Blagden Alley space behind a trio of rowhouses on Ninth Street NW. Actually, their space is still an Erector set of steel beams, located on a patch of dirt where an old brick structure once sat. Douglas is expected to complete construction and turn over an empty shell to the first-time restaurateurs by the end of November, and Langhorne hopes to open his 70-seat restaurant by late spring.”

More details on that space as construction progresses. But in the meantime I learned of some very sweet scuttlebutt, and of course it’s just scuttlebutt, but I hear The Passenger will be taking over one of the other spaces (and an unknown, to me, restaurant will be taking over the third.) The Passenger, located nearby at 1021 7th Street, NW is rumored to close sometime after New Years to make way for another construction project. Updates on the possible move as details emerge. Hopefully we will be able to shout – The Passenger is Dead, Long Live The Passenger!

Update: Sadly the folks from Passenger say they won’t be moving here.
