dacha

A reader reports:

“Dacha posted two signs stating that their liquor license has been suspended from November 23 to November 29. All the picnic tables have been removed.

I wonder whether it relates to Dacha’s recent troubles with ABRA, or maybe their new grocery store?

The notices themselves don’t explain the reason for the suspension besides boilerplate about noncompliance with Title 25 of DC Code or Title 23 of the Municipal Regulations, both of which deal with alcohol. And the ABRA Board website hasn’t yet posted any orders addressing this particular suspension. What do you think?”

The Washington Blade reports:

“The D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on Nov. 4 issued a $42,500 fine and a 21-day license suspension…The ABC Board was expected to allow Dacha to stagger its suspension period over multiple dates between now and next spring so that it won’t have to close continuously for 21 consecutive days.”

Holy smokes I guess the marketing strategy worked…

From a press release:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, At-Large Councilmember Vincent Orange, and Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans joined Events DC – the convention and sports authority for the District – to announce six new retail and restaurant tenants that will soon occupy spaces that have been vacant for years at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. These businesses will bring highly anticipated economic activity and jobs to Washington, DC, and more community services to the Shaw Corridor.

By filling 100% of the available space at the Convention Center’s street-facing retail establishments, Events DC is demonstrating its dedication to the Shaw community, while contributing to the continued economic vitality of the District. Collectively, the leases with these businesses represent a 10-year revenue of $7 million.

Future tenants coming to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, include the following establishments:

· Unconventional Diner, a locally owned and operated high-end diner concept and brainchild of two DC residents/business owners.

· Union Kitchen Grocery, a locally inspired corner market that will be expanding the brand’s footprint to the Shaw neighborhood. Union Kitchen Grocery has an existing location in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

· Smoked & Stacked, a fast-casual sandwich shop that will showcase in-house brined and smoked pastrami.

· Morris, a craft cocktail bar, featuring notable DC-based chef and restauranteur, Spike Mendelsohn. This cocktail bar will be an expansion from their Sheppard concept which had its original location in Dupont Circle.

· Urban Athletic Club and Composition ID, a motivating and inspiring fitness marketplace and health diagnostic center. Urban Athletic Club has previously existing locations in both Georgetown and Glover Park.

· A Barbershop Concept that will relocate their pre-existing location in the Shaw neighborhood.”

And Le Labo is coming on the Florida Ave side. Their website says:

“WE BELIEVE…

We believe that there are too many bottles of perfume and not enough soulful fragrances

We believe the soul of a fragrance comes from the intention with which it is created and the attention with which it is prepared

We believe fine perfumery must create a shock – the shock of the new, combined with the shock of the intimately familiar

We believe that fine perfumery must be irreverent

We believe it is more humane to test cosmetics on New Yorkers than on animals

We believe celebrities should pay full price

We believe the future of luxury (hence of perfumery) lies in craftsmanship

We believe in the soulful power of thoughtful hands: hand-picked roses, hand-poured candles, hand-formulated perfumes and handshake agreements

We believe in the passionate souls who work close to us

We believe in Hafiz’s take on life : “Act great, dear. Always act great”

We believe New York made us this way, with a dose of Wabi-Sabi and a few lines from Thoreau

We believe we/you should put away our modern tools and take the time to smell the roses along the way

We believe that we are only young once, but we can be immature forever

And we believe that explanation kills art. Therefore, forget about all of this !”

A reader passes on from the MPD3D listserv:

“I write with a bit of a scary and disappointing update. My three-year-old and I were held up at knife point yesterday [Nov. 10th] as we left the Kennedy Recreation Center around 12:30 pm. We are fine, just shaken.

Based on my conversations with MPD over the last two days, I encourage you all to stay vigilant, take routes with a lot of foot traffic (I was on Marion, which is pretty quiet), and to minimize using your phone while you walk/keep your phone somewhere secure (this wasn’t my issue, but per MPD grabbed phones out of hands and strollers are the most common robberies with a child present).

I hope that no one takes this news as a reason to avoid Kennedy – I think we are safer and happier when everyone is out fully participating in our community.

MPD responded in part:

“…we have deployed the Crime Suppression Team to this area to investigate these numerous complaints. We are still actively looking into your concerns and our Third District Detective office is investigating the robbery that occurred on Tuesday.”

“Dear PoPville,

I witnessed an attack last night around 8pm on my walk home right by the Shaw metro, in the median between the library and the 7-11 on Rhode Island Ave. A group of teenagers came up behind another young man and took him down, then kicked him in the back and – this was the worst part- one of them savagely stomped his face. Then they kept walking toward the metro. A number of bystanders stayed around to help, call the police, and give statements. The victim was conscious and talking after a few minutes, but he didn’t seem to know his assailants. He said they took his bag as well. Police, emergency response, and an ambulance arrived fairly quickly and a cop called me a couple hours later to ask me to go over my statement again. They hadn’t caught the perpetrators yet.

It was scary to witness such casual violence. There was a lot of blood and I really hope the guy is okay. It’s a good sign that he was able to answer questions from the fire department guys.

Does anyone have tips for observing useful details when something like this happens? I felt so bad that I saw it happen but couldn’t have picked one of the people involved out of a lineup. It felt like it happened so fast and I couldn’t process what I’d seen quickly enough to get relevant identifying details. And I didn’t want to chase after the group as they sauntered away.”

Ed. Note: A reader recently wrote that the police advised them to look at the attacker’s shoes and provide a description of them.
