Update:

“Please join us Monday 1/22 at 8pm at Wagtime (North West location) for a candlelight vigil celebrating the life and accomplishments of Lisa Schreiber. Lisa was a beacon of light in a town where compassion and kindness are scarce commodities. Her generosity knew no bounds; her dedication to animals no comparison. With each candle we light, we remember how she touched us. How she inspired us to be better versions of ourselves. And, we honor the incredible legacy she leaves behind.”

And a GoFundMe has been set up here.

A reader passes on the sad news from Wagtime: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I live in the 400 block of M Street, NW. This man, who called himself Doug, approached our residence around 11 pm last night (Sunday 11/14). He claimed to live in the neighborhood and was locked out and needed a phone to call someone for help. He used my phone to first call a “friend” who didn’t pick up. He claimed to work for Whitman Walker Health, so he called his “office” number (the actual WWH phone #) and again no answer. He had me dial and put the phone on speaker, I believe so I would hear both calls go to answering machines. (more…)

2012 9th Street, NW

I took 24 photos of the light fixtures alone. And this was just a pre-preview but I couldn’t stop marveling. Folks familiar and who were fans of the OG Chez Billy (RIP) on Georgia Ave in Petworth will be very, very pleased. Gaslight reminds me a lot of how Chez Billy looked like when they first opened. Not exactly of course, here we have a serious 1920s Art Deco vibe.

Before we get to all the photos, which really don’t do the space justice but will give you a taste, a few details. The Hilton brothers, most know by now, are the crew behind Marvin, Gibson, El Rey, Satellite Room, Brixton and more. Joe Reza is the force behind American Ice Company (and more.) So you know the place is gonna look good. But I spoke to Joe briefly yesterday who was actually most excited about the food. The chef will be Brendan L’Etoile from Chez Billy Sud and he’s excited about oysters. I am excited that he is excited about oysters. Joe says there won’t be reservations but it’ll be like the first floor of Bar Pilar when they first opened. You find a seat and you’ll get good service. It’s casual but not too casual and both the food and service are expected to be “exceptional” according to Joe. Ed. Note: I’ll be posting the menus in full as soon as I get them. Anyway, they’ll be opening in “a few weeks” so as I said, this is just a pre-preview – stay tuned for proper preview photos and an exact opening date soon. In the meantime:

23 light fixtures and lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The following was written by PoPville contributor David McAuley, founder of Short Articles about Long Meetings.

Experts from DC Water said last night (January 2) that the storms that caused last summer’s flooding in Shaw were “one- to five-year events”. They also said that DC Water’s Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project (NEBT), currently under construction and designed to remedy the flooding, would not be completed until 2023. The implication is that flooding and sewer backups could easily happen again in Shaw, perhaps more than once, before the situation improves. DC Water is offering homeowners in potentially affected areas, including Shaw, a rebate program to encourage improvements to prevent sewer backup when (not if) the next storm of a similar type comes. 1219 9th Street, NW near the Convention Center

We’ve come a long way since the Old Dominion Brewhouse closed back in 2014.

From a press release:

“On December 18, 2017, acclaimed chef David Deshaies and his partners will unveil Unconventional Diner, an upscale traditional American diner located at the Washington Convention Center in the heart of the Shaw neighborhood. Unconventional Diner features modern comfort food with unexpected dishes that you wouldn’t normally find in a traditional diner. Opening exclusively for dinner at first, the diner will soon serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in a casual atmosphere where guests can enjoy fresh, wholesome food served along side affordable craft cocktails, American beer and International wines. Unconventional Diner was partly inspired by Deshaies’ mentor Michel Richard, who once gave him the advice to open a diner.

Check out the mainUD_menu (PDF) and the UD_dessert_menu (PDF)

“We created Unconventional Diner as a modern take on a traditional American diner. My earliest and most-treasured American food memories are of groups of chefs huddled late night over plates
of biscuits and gravy and three-egg omelets. We’re trying to redefine what modern comfort food is – it’s international; a balance of healthy and decadent; features bold flavors and locally grown/sourced ingredients; and most of all it’s approachable,” says Deshaies.

Whether you love meat-and-potatoes or vegan, super-foods, Unconventional Diner has something for everyone, all made from scratch. Menu items will include Corn Bread Muffins, Foie Gras PB & J, Chicken Noodle Soup, Chickpea Stew, Steak & Eggs, Meatloaf and Southern Collard Greens. (more…)
