Well this is sad news for fans of the longtime Caribbean carryout at Lamont and Georgia Ave, NW. I spoke with the owner of Rita’s who said they will remain open until they find a buyer. We judged Rita’s back in March 2010.

Thanks to Philip Di Ruggiero for sending. Check out what 732 Lamont St, NW used to look like:

Back in early Aug. we noted that Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine was getting renovated at 3113 Georgia Ave, NW. They are now looking to offer breakfast all day – literally. A recent request to amend their liquor license says they’d like:
“To operate 24 hours/day, seven days per week to serve food.”
Dear PoPville,
I wanted to update the story you published a couple weeks ago about the man exposing himself on Irving Street between Sherman and Georgia Ave. I have seen a man matching the original story’s description the past two days. Yesterday he was masturbating, and today he was exposing himself. Both times he has been on the north side of Irivng walking east towards Georgia Ave. He didn’t say anything to me as I passed by. I called MPD both times to note the incident. While it is disturbing for an adult to see something like that, I’m even more concerned now that there are lots of kids walking on that block on their way to school. The incidents happened around 7:45 and 7:30am.

Dear PoPville,
Last night around 1:40 AM my roommates heard several gunshots outside of our house on the corner of Columbia and Sherman in Columbia Heights. One of them called the police and 9 police cars, 1 ambulance, and a fire truck were there within a few minutes. They blocked off Sherman to cut off a bunch of people trying to flee the scene. Probably had trouble getting away because of all of the construction.
We haven’t had any shootings on our corner since about a year and a half ago and haven’t heard anything else yet.
Another reader writes that he hears it was a result of “a beef with another crew on Georgia Ave.”
@DCPoliceDept tweeted:
“3D Shooting-2900 Sherman Ave NW.1st Adult male shot in chest, 2nd adult male shot in arm, both conscious & breathing/ No lookout”
From MPD:
“At approximately 1:40 am, Third District units were called to the 2900 block of Sherman Avenue NW for sounds of gunshots. Officers found 2 adult males suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. Anyone with information relating to this event is encouraged to call (202)727-9099.”
Dear PoPville,
On Monday evening, my friend was going for a run and apparently startled a pitbull as he turned a corner at Harvard and Georgia. The pitbull attacked, and the owner left the scene. My friend spent a few hours at the hospital, thankfully only with an insane amount of stitches, and the police eventually caught up with the owner, but right now, the dog is just in quarantine in the owner’s home.
Apparently, this dog has bit 4 other people, and my friend is really lucky he didn’t need surgery. We’ve called animal control and the Department of Health, but just wanted to know if anyone who has experienced anything like this might have some advice for how we can make sure this is handled properly. We don’t want the dog to have to be euthanized, but it really needs to at least have a muzzle, and the owner should be liable for something.
Dear PoPville,
I was walking on the south side of Irving St NW between Sherman and Georgia Ave NW on Tuesday morning at about 7:30am. A black man, who I’d guess to be about 25 years old, stepped out in front of me with his penis exposed and asked me if I “like black d***.” We had both been waiting to cross Sherman at the light and he had run up the street in front of me, clearly planning to expose himself. I figured it was a weird freak thing, but Thursday morning I was in the same place walking home at the same time and he stepped out in front of me from behind a tree with his penis exposed again.
Since he seems to be making this a regular morning thing, I wanted to make sure people in the neighborhood know. Both times I saw him he was wearing black pants and a black jacket. On Tuesday morning he had a black and white head scarf on, but not this morning. I’ve contacted the police. I suggest if anyone else sees him, they do the same. He wasn’t aggressive toward me either time, but who knows what he might do next time.
