Not the most exciting news – but I know folks like to hear the scuttlebutt as soon as I hear it. So, I’m hearing that a florist and a dry cleaner are looking at two of the spaces in the Park Place building above the Petworth Metro.

It’s also not clear to me if Park Place Cafe is still coming. As many have noted and written – the coming soon sign has been up for ages with no progress. I’m still 99% sure a coffee shop/cafe will come into the space (corner of Georgia and Quincy), it’s just not clear to me whether or not it is going to be from the folks behind Tynan. Keep in mind this is all scuttlebutt and there is no confirmation on any of this. But based on the number of emails I receive every week about these spaces – well, I wanted to share what I had.

I promise to update you on these space as more concrete info becomes available.

Sad to see Bilal Grocery papered over at 4328 Georgia Ave, NW, especially since it looked like it had just recently been renovated. In either happier news or worse news it looks like the decrepit buildings next to Fasika (4422 Georgia Ave, NW) are finally getting renovated. Or it’s gonna look like this for months. I’m cautiously optimistic because of some permits I spotted in the unit to the left of the photo.

And looks like Fasika is adding a serious coffee component to their restaurant:

Most people know that Tim Russert is buried in this cemetery (by Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW and near the Old Soldiers Home grounds). And last week we looked at some sweet sculptures. But this is the first time I encountered the tombstones of a prime minister and princess.

Of course the French Prime Minister Camille Chautemps was described as “intellectually bereft” and “after World War II, a French court convicted him in absentia for collaborating with the enemy”.

And I’m not exactly sure who the princess is.

Nevertheless! A prime minister and a princess – not too shabby…

“Dear PoP,

Do you have any info about the construction at Georgia Ave and Quincy St.?”

This is going to be a 49 unit condo project by Donatelli Development. Units will include 1 bedrooms, 1bed + den, and 2 bedrooms (with prices ranging from roughly $300s – $400s. It will be a six story building. There was a groundbreaking ceremony back in March ’10.

I’ll be updating with a “judging new buildings” post as construction progresses.

Back in October a reader writes in about an effort to get Tom’s Eggs sold at the YES! Organic Market at Taylor and Georgia Ave, NW. That effort was unsuccessful but Tom writes me some good news:

“Kera, owner of Domku restaurant, 821 Upshur street, NW has agreed to allow me to sell my eggs at her location.
Eggs will be available just inside the domku front door. Hours will be every Sunday 0900am till noon. We will begin this Sunday, November 28th.”

Tom will also continue to sell his eggs at the Dupont Farmers Market. This is great news and very cool of Domku. For those who were fans of the eggs at the Petworth Farmers Market – here’s your opportunity to get them year round. Nice.

And for those looking for pickled eggs you may have to wait for spring…

I was admiring this building from the Old Soldiers Home (by Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW) when I couldn’t figure out what was up with the watch tower up top. So first – is that a watch tower up top or some sort of gigantic chimney? Does it look like it was added at a later time to the structure? Any speculation on why something like that was added?

I still think it’s a pretty sweet building.

Couple more shots including a closeup after the jump. (more…)

Despite having the greatest name of all-time Beveragemania was not able to stay in business at 849 Upshur St, NW. The space has been closed since May ’09. I happened to spot a permit on the window saying the new proposed space will be for a restaurant. Keep in mind – Beveragemania was also listed as a restaurant but unless it becomes a take out place I think this will be good news for the block. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

We’ve spoken about Rock Creek Church cemetery (by Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW and near the Old Soldiers Home grounds) in the past. But every time I don’t go for a few months I’m always amazed by its beauty. Particularly many of the sculptures found throughout the grounds. I’m gonna highlight a few that struck me as particularly cool on a recent trip. And if you haven’t been in person, it’s worth the trip.

This is some old school dirty scuttlebutt. This is the type of scuttlebutt that pisses off a lot of people. So let me be blunt – I have zero confirmation on this, it is pure hearsay and I will only give it 50/50 odds of it being true. Nevertheless, there are a couple of reasons why I wanted to share. Firstly, I’ve got a ton of emails from folks asking about Gillian Clark’s project above the Petworth metro (pictured above). They referenced an Examiner post (via Washingtonian) saying that Clark’s Georgia Avenue Meeting House was slated to open at 3730 Georgia Ave., NW in early 2011. Then City Paper’s Tim Carman also reported after talking with Clark that her Petworth spot should open around March 2011.

It was in Dec. ’08 that I first shared Clark’s Petworth plans. And don’t get me wrong. I really hope the Petworth project is gonna happen but I heard some scuttlebutt from a person very familiar/involved with DC’s restaurant scene. And I just can’t dismiss it because the person who I heard it from is really plugged in. They heard that Clark had signed a lease in one of the new NoMa spaces around 1st St, NE.

So it leaves me with one nagging question – if the scuttlebutt is true – will it affect the Petworth plans?

Of course there is an equally good chance that this scuttlebutt is just scuttlebutt and the NoMa project was never gonna happen. Or even if it does, perhaps NoMa and Petworth will both get new Clark restaurants? In which case I’ve got all worked up over nothing. That’s another thing I’ve learned after 4 years of blogging. That happens too. I promise to update as more info becomes available. I tend to find alcohol application permits (while not perfect) a very good indicator if a restaurant is actually coming or not. All that is to say, stay tuned.

The Craigslist ad says:

“Jr. 1 Bedroom Apt
-NEW Carpet
-Updated Kitchen
-Electric

-Blocks from Petworth-Georgia Ave Metro

This apartment is located on the ground floor is in a twenty unit apartment building. The tenant is responsible for the Electric.”

I think we may have looked at one here a while ago but I like to post ones that I think are good for under $1000. Does $811 sound reasonable for a junior 1 bed at this location?
