I’m digging the brick crosswalks on Georgia Ave. These are from outside the Petworth Library but I also saw some a bit south by Sweet Mango and the CVS.

Dear PoPville,
I have to say my husband & I are pleasantly surprised with the latest addition to Petworth. Epiphany. He went a week ago for lunch while working on the house and he is from NC and spent a fair amount of time in Texas. In his opinion, the brisket was solid. Now, I can tell you he has extremely high standards. Tonight, we stopped in for dinner. Cece was at the register and was sweet as can be. The Chef, Christian was very proud to chat with us after eating. My husband repeated with the brisket and I got the pulled pork. Two happy diners :) The collards were sweet (not tangy or spicey) but good and the cole slaw was really good. We will return and love this new affordable neighborhood place.

A few weeks ago I noticed that the former Safari DC space had been leased at 4306 Georgia Ave, NW in Petworth. I spoke with the owner who said there will be an extensive renovation, though the name will stay the same, and they hope to reopen in November. More info as construction progresses.

Dear PoPville,
I noticed some work going on at the commercial property located at 5505 5th St, near the corner of 5th and Kennedy. The old sign indicates it was the home of the National Association of Former Foster Care Children of America. Know what’s up?

From Safeway:
Safeway will close its Petworth Safeway at 3830 Georgia Ave. NW on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. as the grocery chain begins preparations to construct a new, state-of-the-art facility that will anchor a mixed-use development featuring five floors of residential dwellings at the corner of Georgia and Randolph Sts. The new store is scheduled to open in early summer of 2014.
Once completed, the new 62,000 square-foot facility will be the third largest Safeway in the city and replace the current store, which was built in 1963 and measures 21,250 square feet. The project will feature a full-service Safeway at street level with below grade parking on the first level solely for Safeway shoppers and the second level dedicated exclusively for the building’s residents.
The company will operate a temporary pharmacy in a storefront location at 4034 Georgia Ave. NW for the duration of the construction period beginning Monday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. The pharmacy will operated from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. no Sundays. In addition, Safeway will offer free shuttle bus service to its Piney Branch Rd. store three times a week for Petworth customers in need of transportation during the construction period. The service will begin on Monday, Sept. 10 running three days each week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and departing from the temporary pharmacy address. The bus will make return trips to the pharmacy every 30 minutes.
Safeway’s Petworth customers (those residing in specific ZIP codes surrounding the store) can also take advantage of the grocer’s Safeway.com online, home delivery service which will be offering free delivery for purchases of $75 or more (a savings of up to $12.95) until the new store is opened.

Red Derby’s roof deck opened back in Oct. 2010. It is awesome. The only complaint was that if it was a hot day, you would melt. Looks like a bit more shade is being manufactured:

Here’s what it looked like in Oct. 2010:

From a press release:
President Lincoln’s Cottage will be the first public venue to display a rare, signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation recently purchased by David M. Rubenstein. The historic document will be displayed in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center at President Lincoln’s Cottage from September 22nd, 2012, the date Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, through the end of February 2013.
“Lincoln Cottage was where much of the Emancipation Proclamation was drafted and reflected upon
by President Lincoln, and it thus now seems among the most fitting places for this historic document
to be displayed to the public. I am pleased and honored to help make this possible,” Rubenstein said.
“We are extremely grateful to David M. Rubenstein for lending us the Emancipation Proclamation
for the 150th anniversary of Lincoln first issuing it to the public.” said Erin Carlson Mast, Director
of President Lincoln’s Cottage. “The Emancipation Proclamation is one of the foremost symbols
of freedom in our nation’s history. By viewing this rare copy of the proclamation at the very site
where Lincoln thought through these nation-changing ideas, visitors will be able to gain a deeper
understanding of the global and cultural importance of what took place at President Lincoln’s
Cottage.”President Lincoln developed the Emancipation Proclamation while living at the Cottage in the summer
of 1862, making it the authentic place for understanding Lincoln’s ideas on slavery and emancipation.
President Lincoln’s Cottage, the “cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation,” is offering programs,
special tours, and events in partnership with national organizations to commemorate the 150th
anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.President Lincoln’s Cottage, located in northwest Washington, D.C., is a site of the National Trust
for Historic Preservation. President Clinton declared the site a National Monument in 2000 and it
opened to the public for the first time in 2008, providing Americans with unparalleled insight into the
Emancipation Proclamation and Abraham Lincoln’s visionary leadership. Through innovative guided
tours, forward-thinking exhibits and quality educational programs, over 100,000 visitors have engaged
in conversations on freedom, experienced a personal transformation in how they view our shared
past, and reconsidered their role in our democracy today. Hours of operation: Tours on the hour,
7 days a week. Visitor Center open 9:30am-4:30pm Mon-Sat, 10:30am-4:30pm Sunday. For more

3605 14th St, NW
Back in March 2012 we learned that Mad Momos beer garden and restaurant, coming to 3605 14th St, NW (at Perry Place) would be getting a sweet roof deck. We also took a look at the status of the renovations. Since March there has been a tremendous amount of progress and I’m happy to be able to share lots of photos. They are on track for an early Autumn opening. Stay tuned and follow their progress on their Facebook page. In the meantime – check out how amazing the space is starting to look.
Starting from the outside you’ll notice a new paint job and the old awning. But soon you won’t recognize the old awning as it will be completely covered in vines, starting with Carolina Jasmine:

Continuing the green theme, when you walk in the first floor you are greeted by the start of a future green wall and exposed brick. The walls will also featuring community art displays in the future:

The first floor also features a 20 foot bar:

The bar is made of reclaimed wood from the original house:

The first floor also features huge windows that open up bringing in lots of light:

Take the stairs to the 2nd floor:

Lots more photos of the 2nd floor and roof deck after the jump. (more…)
