“Dear PoPville,

This is what Sherman Circle has looked like for days. The pocket parks around are just as bad – no sidewalks or pathways cleared. In the Spring the NPS takes too long to cut the grass, in Winter they ignore the ice. Earlier this week folks were walking in the street in the circle – I guess it was safer than falling on the ice.”

and while I sympathize with the early wake up I still gotta file the following under damned if you do and damned if you don’t:

“As you know, this Saturday we got a snow storm that gave us lots of snow and ice. I hope/expect that our neighbors will shovel the next day to make the sidewalks safe for walking around. However, this Saturday night/crack of dawn Sunday, we were woken up at 4am by people shoveling/chipping away at the ice on the sidewalk across the street. It was REALLY LOUD and this went on for two hours until they finally finished, so we were kept awake from 4-6am because of this. This seemed a little absurd. It is possible that it could have been a church doing it for their Sunday morning service, but still, 4am seems a little crazy for shoveling ice and waking everyone up. I know there is a law that people have to shovel/de-ice their sidewalks within a day or so of the precipitation, but is there a law banning people from loudly shoveling ice in the middle of the night within the city? Or just common courtesy?”

“Dear PoPville,

The west (northbound) entrance to the Georgia Ave Metro station has been closed for over a week now. No sign, no explanation. I wrote to them last week asking what was up but of course never received so much as an acknowledgement (they at least used to send a confirmation that they got your message). This morning around 8 a few workers were standing around shooting the breeze with a couple of cops.

Looking at this in the context of your reader’s report on this morning’s Red line mess that WMATA didn’t bother to explain to customers and a similar situation last week, an unfortunate pattern seems to be emerging where Metro is showing even less accountability to and respect for its customers than it did before. Who’s in charge over there?”

In a rant/revel last week a reader found this update from WMATA:

Thanks to all who sent tweets and emails about the upcoming royal visit. From a press release:

“At the request of the British Government Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will make a four day visit to the United States of America from 17th – 20th March 2015.

2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War and the death of President Abraham Lincoln. In Washington DC, The Prince and The Duchess will visit the Armed Forces Retirement Home, which is set in the same grounds as the Lincoln Cottage, where it is believed Abraham Lincoln wrote the last draft of the Emancipation Proclamation. Named ‘The Soldier’s Home’ when it was established in 1851, the Armed Forces Retirement Home is America’s oldest veterans’ retirement home. During their visit, Their Royal Highnesses will meet veterans from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coastguard.”

AP emails us the video below:

“So on top of the crowds at the new Safeway in Petworth, a pipe just burst in the garage and in the store. This is the scene downstairs. If that freezes, at least a dozen cars are going to have a nightmarish time getting out.”

“Dear PoPville,

This truck and trailer have been blocking the SW bound lane of the 3900 block of Kansas Ave NW since the early, early morning hours of Saturday 2/14. It initially had a patrol car stationed behind it until midday Saturday, but as of Sunday night, it has a ticket on it and calls into 311 & 911 have simply been met with responses of no idea what to do and that the district doesn’t have the equipment to tow a tractor trailer. Since traffic has to move into the oncoming NE bound lanes to get around the truck and visibility to the east bound traffic on Randolph is almost completely blocked, this is a traffic accident waiting to happen. How does one get the truck moved?”

Ed. Note: MPD is aware of the situation and is conferring with the Department of Public Works. MPD does not have a crane that can tow a tractor trailer.

UPDATE: After MPD alerted DPW and the Mayor’s Office – the truck has been removed.

Thanks to Sam Dixon for sharing these powerful photos:

“Earlier today [Sunday] I was wrapping up some photo editing on an unseasonably warm February afternoon when I heard the sounds of what could only be a nearby brass band seep through my walls. I really really like brass bands. Grabbed my camera and walked outside, there was a brass band. From what I could gather the band was from a local church and were visiting a sick member.”
