From MPD:

Shortly before 430pm on September 24, 2012, a complainant was riding her bicycle in the alley in the 600 block of Newton Place, NW., when she was approached by a juvenile suspect. The juvenile suspect demanded her bicycle. When the complainant refused to give her bicycle to the suspect, the suspect produced a gun. The suspect took the bicycle and while taking the bicycle the suspects gun fell to the ground. The complainant picked up the gun and ran home. The suspect fled on foot, where he was observed by Fourth District Officers in the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue, NW. The officers stopped the suspect and he was identified by the complainant as the person that robbed her.

Dear PoPville,

I was walking back to my house in Columbia Heights on Sherman Avenue last weekend at around 2 AM and was mugged. I was alone, but because I was sober and only going a few blocks I assumed I would be fine (a mistake of becoming too comfortable in the neighborhood after a couple of years). I was caught completely off guard because my attackers were two females who appeared to be in their early 20s (I’m a female as well). They initially approached me to ask for a cigarette. After walking another block I heard someone behind me and saw the two females again. I asked if they needed help with something else; my initial thought was they must have seen something that made them uncomfortable and walked back towards me to ask for help. At this point they knocked me to the ground and pepper sprayed me before taking my purse.

A cab appeared then and I was able to deal with the situation fairly quickly. Props to the cops as well for being very responsive and helpful. I doubt this will be the last time these women attempt to attack and rob someone. The cops told me women mugging other women is not unusual, but this has not happened to any of my friends in the area before, and I truly was not expecting it.

From a press release:

The Avenue at Park Morton will celebrate its grand opening with a ceremony and reception on Friday, September, 21 from 12:30pm – 2:30pm. The Avenue is located at 3506 Georgia Avenue, NW.

The Avenue is a new, 83-unit mixed-use community designed as the first phase of the Park Morton New Communities Initiative. A 100% affordable rental building, the Avenue includes a mix of 1 and 2-BR units, amenity spaces such as meeting rooms, lounge, fitness center, underground parking, and ground floor retail. The Avenue is an energy-efficient and sustainably designed development and is targeting certification through the Enterprise Green Communities program.

Remember the Newton Variety Mart and Car Wash? See what it looked like in Feb. 2011 and a heartbreaking reward poster from that time here.

For the record, I think the building looks fantastic. Do you like the way it turned out?

Dear PoPville,

I wanted to update the story you published a couple weeks ago about the man exposing himself on Irving Street between Sherman and Georgia Ave. I have seen a man matching the original story’s description the past two days. Yesterday he was masturbating, and today he was exposing himself. Both times he has been on the north side of Irivng walking east towards Georgia Ave. He didn’t say anything to me as I passed by. I called MPD both times to note the incident. While it is disturbing for an adult to see something like that, I’m even more concerned now that there are lots of kids walking on that block on their way to school. The incidents happened around 7:45 and 7:30am.

Dear PoPville,

Last night around 1:40 AM my roommates heard several gunshots outside of our house on the corner of Columbia and Sherman in Columbia Heights. One of them called the police and 9 police cars, 1 ambulance, and a fire truck were there within a few minutes. They blocked off Sherman to cut off a bunch of people trying to flee the scene. Probably had trouble getting away because of all of the construction.

We haven’t had any shootings on our corner since about a year and a half ago and haven’t heard anything else yet.

Another reader writes that he hears it was a result of “a beef with another crew on Georgia Ave.”

@DCPoliceDept tweeted:

“3D Shooting-2900 Sherman Ave NW.1st Adult male shot in chest, 2nd adult male shot in arm, both conscious & breathing/ No lookout”

From MPD:

“At approximately 1:40 am, Third District units were called to the 2900 block of Sherman Avenue NW for sounds of gunshots. Officers found 2 adult males suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. Anyone with information relating to this event is encouraged to call (202)727-9099.”
