“Emma’s Torch, the nonprofit social enterprise that provides culinary training for refugees, asylees and survivors of human trafficking, empowering them to build culinary careers and achieve financial independence, will open its new 4,500-square-foot café and training center on June 12 in Silver Spring (1200 East-West Hwy.). The new café location – which will host a ribbon-cutting with officials and community members on June 11 at 10 am – allows Emma’s Torch to expand upon the training space and dining that drew fans to its Brookland location, which closed late last year to prepare for the move.

Dunkin’ coming to WMATA Headquarters in L’Enfant Plaza

“Metro has executed a 10-year lease agreement with Dunkin’ to open at Metro’s headquarters building, expanding the list of eateries around L’Enfant Plaza and adding value to the Southwest D.C. neighborhood.

The coffee chain will be located on D Street SW between 6th and 7th streets SW, near the existing Potbelly and D.C. Housing Authority spaces. The shop is expected to open in late 2026 or early 2027. (more…)

Petworth (and beyond) PSA: “Piney Branch Parkway Section to Reopen Monday, Restoring a Key Route for DC Commuters”

Good news from DC Water:

“Following a 27-day closure, DC Water will reopen a section of Piney Branch Parkway between Arkansas Avenue and Beach Drive NW early Monday morning, restoring an important cross-town connection for thousands of District commuters. During the closure, a section of the road was temporarily relocated for construction of DC Water’s Piney Branch Tunnel Project.

Enhanced safety measures have also been put in place to protect drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. A new three-way stop has been added at Piney Branch Parkway and 17th Street. Rumble strips and jersey barriers with high-visibility reflective markings were installed as well to alert drivers of the new curve in the road.

The adjoining pedestrian and bike trail will be separated from the construction site by barriers and fencing. A raised crosswalk at the work zone entrance will also help pedestrians cross safely and a there will be a defined path to guide cyclists through the area. Flaggers will also be on site when equipment or materials need to move across the road.

This temporary road shift is needed so crews can build the Piney Branch Tunnel, and the roadway will be returned to the original alignment at the end of the project. (more…)

From Alert DC: “DC Water reports an emergency water outage in the 1100-1200 block of Columbia Road NW, due to a broken 12-inch water main. There are 100 homes and 4 hydrants affected. Restoration time is 6-8 hours.”

Ed. Note: Sundressfest takes place at Wonderland (11th and Kenyon St, NW) 11th Street NW, between Irving and Lamont Streets so this shouldn’t cause trouble for it. In fact knowing Sundressfest, this will only make for a more epic event. Have a safe fun time for all who attend!

From vintage finds and furniture to toys and baby goods, vinyl records, art, books, collectibles, and unexpected oddities, the annual event draws visitors from across the DMV to explore blocks of sales throughout the neighborhood.

But organizers say the event has become much more than a traditional yard sale.

“People tell us it’s their favorite day of the year,” said organizers from the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA), the sponsoring organization. “It’s part treasure hunt, part community festival, and part neighborhood adventure.”
